Northern Community Bank remembers founder member Lou Gildea.

It is with much sadness that Northern Community Bank received the news that Lou Gildea passed away. Lou and his wife Mary were the founder members of Nelson Credit Union which was formed in 1982, now widely known in the community as Northern Community Bank.

Lou was President for the first 21 years and remained a director on the board for a further 4 years. He continued to keep an eye on the growth and progress made by the Community bank movement across Pendle and Burnley, attending board meetings until last year, as well as attending the Annual General Meetings.

Lou had worked as a Credit Union Developer for Burnley Borough Council until his retirement and helped set up local Community Banks and was well respected in the Community Bank movement. There is a long list of Lou’s achievements and all at Northern Community Bank were very pleased when he was awarded the Pioneer Award at the ABCUL Conference 2014.  He was extremely proud to receive the award.

It is the end of an era for Northern Community Bank, Lou was an inspirational man who worked tirelessly for Northern Community Bank, setting strong foundations for us to build on.  Without Lou and Mary we would not have the Credit Union we have today which has helped so many people in the community.
