Feel more in control of your money – one step at a time.
Budgeting doesn’t have to mean spreadsheets and sacrifice. At its heart, it’s simply about understanding what’s coming in, what’s going out, and making your money work for you.
At Northern Community Bank, we’re here to help you feel more confident and less overwhelmed, so you can take control of your money in a way that fits your real life.
What Is a Budget, Really?
A budget is just a plan for your money. It helps you:
- See where your money’s going
- Make sure bills are covered
- Spot areas to cut back if needed
- Put aside a little for savings or emergencies
- Avoid borrowing more than you can afford
You don’t have to get it perfect, just start small and build from there.
How to Create a Simple Budget
1. Work Out What You’ve Got Coming In
Start with your regular income:
- Wages
- Universal Credit or other benefits
- Pension
- Child Benefit
- Any other regular payments
Be honest and realistic – include everything, no matter how small.
2. Track What’s Going Out
List your monthly spending. Split it into:
- Essentials: Rent/mortgage, gas & electric, council tax, food, transport
- Debts: Loan repayments, credit cards, overdrafts
- Extras: Takeaways, subscriptions, hobbies, nights out
You can use a notebook, spreadsheet, app, or MoneyHelper’s free budget planner.
3. Look for Quick Wins
Are there areas you could trim back, even by a few pounds?
- Cancel unused subscriptions
- Meal plan to cut down food waste
- Check if you’re eligible for support or discounts
- Shop around for better deals on bills
Small changes really can make a big difference.
4. Make a Plan for What’s Left
Once essentials are covered, try to put aside a little each month, even just £5 or £10.
This could go into a savings pot, or help reduce debt faster.
Tip: Setting up a standing order to your savings each payday means you won’t forget, and you’re less likely to spend it.
5. Ask for Help If You Need It
If your outgoings are more than your income, or if debt is getting you down, don’t ignore it. You’re not alone and there are options.
We’re here to help you make a plan that works, without judgement. The earlier you reach out, the more we can do.
