On 24 July 2025, Pennine Community Credit Union became Northern Community Bank. It was more than a new name and a new look – it was a name that better reflected who we are today and the people we serve.

Twelve months later, we’re proud to look back on everything we’ve achieved together.

A year of growth

Over the past year, more people than ever have chosen Northern Community Bank to help them save, borrow and take control of their money.

In the last 12 months:

• Savings have grown from £17 million to more than £21 million.
• We have welcomed 1,500 new account holders, with 800 from East Lancashire, 200 from Preston, 100 Lancaster and 400 from Cumbria.
• Lending has increased from £17.5 million to £18.8 million, helping even more people access fair and affordable borrowing.

These milestones represent much more than growth. They represent families building savings for the future, people borrowing with confidence, and communities choosing a financial organisation that puts people first.

Reaching more communities

One of the reasons behind our new name was to better reflect the people we serve today.

When we first opened our doors in 1982, our roots were firmly in the Pennine area. Today, we support account holders from Burnley and Pendle to Preston, Lancaster and Cumbria.

Over the past year, we’ve been proud to see Northern Community Bank featured across regional newspapers, community publications, trade media and local radio. From Lancashire to Cumbria, our story has reached more people than ever before, helping more people discover Northern Community Bank and the support we offer.

The response from partners and community organisations has also been incredibly positive.

Burnley Councillor Afrasiab Anwar described the new name as one that “properly reflects the footprint of the organisation and the work you do,” while Julie Friend, Cumberland Social Inclusion and Housing Team Leader, said “it helps people better understand what we offer”.

Investing in a better experience

This year has also seen some exciting improvements for our account holders.

We proudly opened our new head office on Manchester Road in Burnley, creating a larger, modern space designed around the needs of our communities. The new branch provides our team with the facilities they need to support more account holders, including helping people make the most of our digital services, by managing their money through our online account and mobile app.

Alongside our new branch, we launched a refreshed mobile app, making it quicker and easier to manage accounts on the go. The updated app gives account holders a simpler way to apply for loans, see their account balances and create savings goals helping them stay connected with their money whenever and wherever they need to.

We also launched two new savings products – Northern Saver and Save the Change – giving people even more ways to build healthy savings habits and make saving part of everyday life.

Supporting our communities

Supporting our communities has always been at the heart of everything we do.

Throughout the year, we’ve continued to meet people across the communities we serve through family events, community activities, presentations and local partnerships. From the Towneley Park Family Fun Day and events with Pendle Family Hub, to supporting activities in Preston, Workington, Whitehaven and across Cumbria, these conversations help us understand the needs of the communities we serve and show more people how they can save and borrow with confidence.

Our commitment to improving financial wellbeing has also continued through our Money Matters project. Through our financial education suitcase project, we have provided over 100 primary schools with resources to help children learn about money in an engaging and practical way. We remain committed to reaching as many schools as possible and helping young people build positive money habits from an early age.

We have also continued to create welcoming spaces for younger account holders, with our Little Savers Corner at our Burnley branch providing a dedicated area where children can begin learning about money in a fun and accessible way.

We’re proud to support organisations making a real difference in our communities. This year we sponsored the Not-for-Profit Award at the Burnley Business Awards, where the category winners Burnley FC in the Community were celebrated for the fantastic work they do in the Community, and we also continued investing in our communities through donations, partnerships and community projects.

At our Annual General Meeting, we announced that £1.1 million would be returned to account holders through our Share of the Profits and Loan Interest Rebate – another reminder that, as a community bank owned by our account holders, our success is shared.

Recognition for what we do

Alongside our growth, we were delighted to receive Highly Commended in the Smart Money People Awards 2025 and to be named finalists for both Best Credit Union North and Best Credit Union Loan Provider 2026.

We also had the opportunity to represent Northern Community Bank at the Building Societies Annual Conference in Edinburgh, sharing ideas with organisations that are equally passionate about putting people first.

Still the same organisation. Still here for you.

Although our name has changed, the values that have guided us since 1982 haven’t.

We’re still owned by our account holders, not external shareholders. We’re still here to help people save, borrow and manage their money with confidence.

Our purpose remains as simple today as it was a year ago: making money easier for everyone.

Looking ahead

It’s hard to believe that a year has already passed since we became Northern Community Bank.

Councillors, neighbouring credit unions, contractors who helped deliver the project, volunteers, community partners and staff gathered at the new Manchester Road branch to celebrate an important milestone in the organisation’s 44-year history.

Guests also heard congratulatory speeches from Burnley Council Chief Executive Lukman Patel and Burnley MP Oliver Ryan.

The larger, modern branch has been designed to make managing money easier and more accessible for everyone, whether account holders choose to use the Northern Community Bank App, Online Account, telephone banking or visit the branch in person. Alongside a welcoming banking hub, the three-storey building includes dedicated spaces for collaborating with community partners, a purpose-built training room and modern working environments that support both staff and account holders.

Guests, many of whom had played a key role in transforming the former Wetherspoons building, were invited to enjoy guided tours before hearing from a number of speakers who reflected on both the journey to create the branch and Northern Community Bank’s vision for the future.

Burnley Council Chief Executive Lukman Patel welcomed Northern Community Bank to its new home and praised the investment in Burnley town centre.

“It is fantastic to see such a significant investment in the heart of Burnley. The quality of the workmanship and attention to detail throughout the building is exceptional and complements the wider public sector investment taking place across our Town Centre. I have been incredibly impressed by Kathryn’s leadership and the positive culture she has created at Northern Community Bank. We are delighted to welcome our new neighbours and wish Kathryn and her team continued success.”

Burnley MP Oliver Ryan spoke passionately about the importance of accessible, ethical finance and the positive impact the new branch will have.

“I have been fortunate to visit this branch three times during the renovation. Looking around this welcoming branch, the vision described by CEO Kathryn and her team has been delivered and will benefit people in the community.”

Reflecting on the organisation’s remarkable journey, Northern Community Bank President Gerard Spain reminded guests that the organisation began in 1982 when just 15 savers contributed a combined £75 to establish the credit union. For its first 15 years, it operated entirely through volunteers from a church hall, with no permanent premises, telephone or internet connection.

He also highlighted the significant progress made in recent years. Since 2021, assets have increased from £15 million to £28 million, savings have grown from £13 million to £21 million and the number of account holders has risen from 12,000 to more than 17,500.

“This is a very proud moment for us all and one which ties in perfectly with the huge rebranding project we have undertaken. It’s been a very interesting two years, but today proves that all of the hard work has been worth it.

“This is a truly remarkable story which we should all be extremely proud of, and a very good reason why we were able to pay for this fantastic development using our own funds, without requiring any external funding.”

Northern Community Bank Chief Executive Kathryn Fogg began the evening by thanking everyone who had contributed to bringing the project to life, including contractors, volunteers, staff and community partners.

Kathryn highlighted that creating a better working environment for staff was important in delivering excellent service

“You need a comfortable, safe environment for your staff team to work, to give the best service that they can give to our account holders.”

Although Northern Community Bank has grown significantly over the past four decades, Kathryn reminded guests that the organisation’s values remain unchanged.

“We started in humble surroundings and we’ve got this wonderful new building now. But inside, we’ve not changed. We’re still the same ethical organisation. We’re a financial cooperative. Our account holders are at our heart. They own Northern Community Bank, and everything we do is for them.

This is a big milestone for us at Northern Community Bank, and we’re really looking forward to welcoming account holders into a larger, modern space designed to better support both our communities and our colleagues.

Subject to everything being completed as planned, we’re aiming to open the doors of our new branch on 15th June 2026.

Why We’re Making This Move

As Northern Community Bank has continued to grow, we’ve simply outgrown our current branch on St James’s Street.

Following the sale of our Nelson branch in January 2025, our Burnley Head Office has become increasingly busy, and it became clear we needed a larger space that would allow us to continue supporting account holders both now and in the future.

Moving to Manchester Road isn’t just about having a bigger building. It’s about creating a better experience for everyone who uses our services.

Our new Burnley branch will allow us to offer:

• more private spaces for conversations about your accounts
• a larger, more comfortable chat room for support
• improved accessibility throughout the branch
• free Wi-Fi for account holders
• additional iPads to support digital banking access
• and a brand-new “Little Savers Corner” for children while parents and guardians speak with our team
• new training and meeting spaces to support staff development and training
• dedicated board room and meeting rooms – facilities we haven’t had before, but are very much needed as we grow

These additional spaces are an important part of how we continue to improve, helping us invest in our colleagues and strengthen the support we provide to account holders who manage their accounts online, through our app, or over the phone.

Whether you visit us in branch or contact us from further afield, our commitment stays exactly the same – to support you in a way that feels friendly, simple, and fair.

And just as importantly, while the building is changing, what we stand for isn’t. We’re still the same Community Bank, here to support the same communities in the same way we always have.

A Space Designed for the Future

Our new building has been designed around how we can better support you and our colleagues day-to-day.

The larger space will allow our teams to work more closely together, improve the support we provide, and help us continue developing both our branch and digital banking services side by side.

Speaking about the new branch, CEO Kathryn Fogg said:

“This is going to be a welcoming, purpose-built hub, where new or existing account holders can manage their accounts. With a Little Savers Corner, to occupy our young savers whilst their parents and guardians are dealing with accounts and areas where we can work with partners from the community to co-promote the work we all do.”

Transforming a Historic Burnley Building

The building itself has a long history in Burnley, and many of you may remember it as:

• The Brun Lea under Wetherspoon’s
• Fitzpatrick’s Bar
• Ellis’s

It’s quite something to see how it’s been transformed from a busy hospitality space into a modern, purpose-built Community Bank headquarters.

The renovation work has been a huge project, and it’s taken time, care, and a lot of coordination to get us to this point.

We worked with Readstone Construction LTD on the redevelopment, which included:

• safely removing asbestos from the front fascia
• stripping out the old bar and hospitality areas
• redesigning layouts across all floors
• removing internal walls and outdated facilities
• and creating a modern, accessible working and account holder space

It hasn’t always been straightforward, and there have definitely been challenges along the way, but we’re incredibly proud of what’s been achieved, and grateful to everyone involved in getting us here.

Supporting Account Holders During the Move

As part of the move to our new Burnley branch, we’ll need to transfer some of our systems and servers to the new building.

While there may be some short downtime during the transition, we’re planning carefully to keep disruption to an absolute minimum and expect very little impact to account access and services.

We’ll continue to keep account holders updated throughout the move and share any important information in advance.
