  1. BrightHouse to close stores

BrightHouse announce it is to close 10% of its stores across the UK.

BrightHouse is to close 30 of its high street stores. Unfortunately the Burnley store looks like it may stay open. The rent-to-own company provides household items such as televisions, cookers, washing machines and furniture on a high interest pay-weekly hire purchase agreement.

BrightHouse has come under pressure in recent times, with the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) last year announcing plans to cap the amount of interest that rent-to-own retailers charge customers, after investigations found that some customers were paying up to four times the average retail price due to high interest payments on items.

In October 2017 they were also ordered by the FCA to redress some 250,000 customers £14.8 Million, when the FCA found the credit checks and collections processes were not up to its expectations.

Andrew Bailey, CEO of the Financial Conduct Authority, recently outlined the aim of the proposed caps

“Today’s measures are designed to bring down very high prices in the rent-to-own sector, which is used by some of the most financially vulnerable in our society. We believe a cap is the only intervention that will effectively tackle the highest prices. If implemented it will save consumers up to £22.7m a year from excessive charges.”

There is little joy for the BrightHouse employees that face redundancies, however it is hard to shed a tear for the company when people in the Burnley and Pendle communities have been purchasing items with representative interest rates of 69.9%APR, with some items attracting interest rates as high as 99.9%APR.

The FCA rent-to-own proposals should come into effect from the 1st April. They include the recommendation that the pay-weekly stores should benchmark the cost of products against the price charged by three other retailers. This will hopefully stop members of our community, who feel forced to use the rent-to-own companies, being hit with a double whammy of overpriced household items which are then compounded by eye watering rates of interest.

  2. “There are no lenders in this area that can match your APR on small home improvement loans”

It is great working in the community, helping people to improve their lives through the simple savings and affordable loan accounts. Our staff had a warm reminder of the positive effect even our small home improvement loans can have to our account holders.

We first met Aaron* whilst he was buying paint from the Community Re-Paint section at SPE Furnishings. He had a desire to improve the rented property he shared with two house mates, to make their house more like a home. Aaron was wary about financial organisations and had experienced high interest lenders taking advantage of people in his community. Aaron had never heard of a credit union and liked the concept of Northern Community Bank being a financial co-operative that is owned and run for the benefit of local people.

Aaron wanted to borrow £400 to make improvements in the bathroom and re-decorate the hall and landing in their property. He did not have to do these home improvements, after all the property was owned by the landlord but he wanted to make a difference to where he lived. After completing the loan application, and affordability assessment, Aaron was provided with the starter loan the next day.

Aaron recently dropped by a Northern Community Bank branch to proudly show off his handy-work with the small home improvement loans. Northern Community Bank staff loved his photographs of the newly renovated stairs, landing and bathroom. Aaron explained that the landlord had been very impressed and was also improving the property after seeing his tenant’s effort – old windows had since been replaced with energy efficient PVC upgrades to keep the house warmer in the winter.

Aaron told us that the loan process had been simple, the repayment plan was manageable and the way that his savings are building up is brilliant

There are no lenders in this area that can match your APR on small loans

After a number of months sticking to his repayment plan, Aaron has successfully applied to top up his loan to pay for his theory and practical driving tests. Next time we see Aaron he may just be looking for a new car!

Mayor of Burnley opens Northern Community Bank’s new Burnley branch

At the branch opening of our not-for-profit cooperative that provides ethical savings and affordable loan accounts to the residents of Burnley and Pendle, speeches were heard from Councillor Charlie Briggs the Mayor of Burnley, Julie Cooper MP for Burnley and representatives from credit unions across the UK who attended the opening of the new premises located at 48 St James’s Street.

Mayor Charlie Briggs cut the ribbon to officially open the branch which will provide Northern Community Bank’s saving and borrowing services six days a week

“I am happy to see Northern Community Bank on Burnley’s high street, it is good for the town and its people to be able to access much needed services”

Northern Community Bank President Gerard Spain welcomed Councillor Briggs and outlined the community bank’s long term commitment to the residents of Burnley

“At a time when some businesses and banks are vacating the high street, by opening this branch we are telling the community that Northern Community Bank are committed to providing saving and borrowing facilities to Burnley and Pendle for many years.”

The new branch has been totally renovated to include a private interview room and cashier desks for account holders to deposit and withdraw. Julie Cooper MP spoke passionately about the importance of Northern Community Bank being situated on the high street amongst the banks, most well-known department stores and coffees shop

“At a time when local people are experiencing low wages or worrying about the expensive Christmas period it is good know the community banks are here to help.”

Amongst the large number of attendees were figures from the UK community banks movement. Karen Bennett, President of ABCUL the main trade association for community banks in Britain, gave a speech offering support from the association as well as sharing experience from Enterprise Community Banks in Liverpool where she is the Chief Executive Officer

“The branch looks great, I am sure it will be a success and I know from Enterprise you will provide services that many people in community need.”

  4. DWP minister Guy Opperman visits Northern Community Bank

DWP minister visits Northern Community Bank in Nelson

Northern Community Bank had the honour of welcoming MP Guy Opperman from the Department for Work and Pensions at our Manchester Road branch in Nelson recently. Mr Opperman joined fellow Conservative MP for Pendle, Andrew Stephenson, for a tour around our not-for-profit co-operative that provides ethical savings and affordable loan accounts to the local community.

Mr Opperman has experience in ethical finance, as he helped to create Tynedale Community Bank, another not-for-profit bank in Northumberland which also allows people to save and borrow money, with interest at a much lower rate than many other lenders.

“There’s a cohort of society that needs looking after, where better to do that than a Community Bank”

    Mr Opperman

As part of his role at DWP Mr Opperman takes a lead on combating financial exclusion. His experience at Tynedale has identified the important role both community banks and community banks have in giving people access to banking services, including loans to people who might otherwise not be able to access them. Mr Opperman states:

“I know first-hand that improving financial inclusion is key to helping some of the poorest and most marginalised in society.”

Deborah Smith-Hands, Chief Operating Officer Officer and Board member Mark Hirst from Northern Community Bank discussed the exciting new town centre branch the community bank is opening at  48 St James’s Street in Burnley which will open our services up to more people in the community. Mr Opperman has regularly commented on need for community led finance whilst the high street banks are leaving town centres across the country

The recent change in legislation has put a huge dent in the likes of Wonga and Brighthouse and I hope this brings more clients to Community banks

    Said Mr Opperman

Northern Community Bank staff recently attended an event at the Palace of Westminster where Guy Opperman joined leading figures from the banking world and MPs from across the political spectrum to pledge their support for the credit union movement in UK.

  5. Northern Community Bank branch within The Calico Group

When Burnley Area Community Bank merged with Pendle Community Bank in 2013 we began looking for a new home in Burnley. The Calico Group kindly offered Northern Community Bank the opportunity to operate a branch within their main office in the town centre.  The highly successful partnership has helped 1200 people to gain access to ethical savings and affordable loan accounts.

A new chapter is on the horizon for Northern Community Bank in Burnley as we embark on a journey which will see us move into our own newly renovated premises at 48 St James’s street. The property, located on the main shopping street in the town centre, amongst some of the most well-known stores, banks and building societies will enable Northern Community Bank to offer its services to more people in the local community.

Moving location should have no effect for our account holders, who have no need to change any methods of depositing. If you require any further information Northern Community Bank are available on 01282 691333, on our website, via email and also through Northern Community Bank‘s social media platforms.

Northern Community Bank will forever be grateful to The Calico Group for offering us the chance in 2013 to operate a branch within their excellent location in Centenary Court, Croft Street. Whilst there 1200 local residents from the Burnley community have opened savings accounts, our partnership has enabled 200 Calico tenants and 93 Calico employees to open accounts. Most pleasing to Northern Community Bank is that 80 junior accounts have been opened in that time, which have helped start young people from our community on the right financial path towards saving and money management.

The Calico Group have been a great help in raising awareness about the benefits of Community Bank membership. We have worked in partnership on a number of schemes, including tackling high interest lenders that prey on community, helping resident to pay for expensive home improvements; the work was completed on homes with the aid of affordable loans from Northern Community Bank.

Whilst being based within Calico’s Centenary Court headquarters Northern Community Bank have issued over £2.1 million in loans. We are extremely proud that we have continued to offer an ethical alternative to the high interest lenders such as the pay weekly stores, pay day loan, and illegal loan sharks that prey on members of our community, whilst still being competitive with large loans up to £15,000.

Without the facilities provided by The Calico Group over the past 5 years our ability to offer access to safe savings and affordable loan accounts to the Burnley community would have been greatly diminished. Whilst Northern Community Bank are moving to our new premises on St James’s Street, Burnley, we are certain that we will continue to receive great support from the partnership formed with The Calico Group.

Northern Community Bank will announce more details regarding the new Burnley branch opening soon. In the meantime if you have a query or require any further information please contact us.

  6. September car registration loans

New DVLA September car registration plates means there are bargains to be had

The new DVLA number plates arrived at the weekend and for many people that signals the start of car hunting season. Of course this happens twice a year, in both March and September we see an increase in car loans at Northern Community Bank and it’s always great to hear from account holders about the deals they’ve struck.

Naturally not everyone wants or needs a brand new car, but the benefit of car shopping when the new registration plates arrive is the knock on effect of all ‘nearly new’ and ‘second hand’ car price tags decreasing.

Of course, dealers will often offer finance deals on their vehicles and while we can’t guarantee that our terms will be better 100% of the time, what we can say is that it’s worth taking the time to find out. That’s the challenge we throw down; if you want to spend more than £3000 on a car, compare the terms offered elsewhere to the terms on a Northern Community Bank car loan, and we’re pretty confident that what we provide will prove highly competitive.

Many garages and dealers, for example, offer finance which starts at 12.9% Representative APR, which is more than we’ll charge for a loan of over £3000. The word ‘representative’, what’s more, means that the rate in question only has to be offered to 51% of applicants. With us, on the other hand, the rate we quote is the rate you pay, every time.

We like to think that our account holders get the kind of deal they simply won’t find anywhere else. To begin with, we run on a not for profit basis, so the interest you pay isn’t going to fund external shareholders dividends or executive bonuses. That’s why we keep our rates so low when compared to other providers

Other benefits of taking your car loan out with Northern Community Bank include the fact that you’ll be saving as you make your repayments, that the interest rate will decrease as the balance does and that there is no penalty for early payments. Above all, we keep things simple; when you take out a car loan with us, you pay for the car and you own it outright from day one.

So if you want to take advantage of the car dealers making space in their show-room or forecourts, then contact Northern Community Bank today about an affordable car loan which will enable you to upgrade your vehicle and the spread the repayments over a manageable period.

If you do apply for a loan we’ll turn the application round as quickly as we can. That means a maximum wait of just two days, although we try to reach a decision in just 1 day, providing all the information we need has been provided. If your application is successful, we can make a same day BACS payment directly to the lender, or to the person or business selling the car.

  7. So Longa Wonga! Wonga administration announced

Community Banks are the alternative as Britain’s biggest payday lender, Wonga has collapsed into administration

Wonga collapsed into administration last week after a flurry of compensation claims over improper sales practices, with an estimated 200,000 customers still owing more than £400m in short-term loans. Northern Community Bank, like many ethical lenders and campaigners that aim to end high cost credit, will not shed any tears for the Payday Lender that has heaped misery on many people in our community.

Wonga’s 1509% representative APR on loans will not be missed

Importantly Wonga’s borrowers have been told to keep making their payments as usual despite the collapse, after singing a loan agreement this is their legal obligation.

However Northern Community Bank, and many Community Banks across the UK are ready to step in and provided an affordable and ethical alternative. We have always been available for members of our community who are using Payday Loans, who want to get out of the cycle of never ending expensive loans.

Northern Community Bank joins calls from campaigners across the ethical finance spectrum, who say that the government and regulators should promote Community banks to replace the high cost lenders to protect borrowers.

Michael Sheen, who started the End High Cost Credit Alliance, aiming to promote more affordable borrowing said

The real danger is that those customers are going to turn to possibly even worse places,

    Sheen added.

There is an opportunity here to support fair and responsible credit providers and help them grow big enough to handle the amount of people that were going to Wonga before.

Another prominent campaigner against the high cost credit industry, Stella Creasy MP, has contacted John Glen, the economic secretary to the Treasury to voice concerns that as we have seen providers of high interest credit such as Wonga disappear previously, they have often been replaced by another seemingly as expensive.

Whether we consider the move of high-cost credit companies like Provident into providing credit cards under the Vanquis brand, or the development of Amigo loans, which use guarantors to underwrite loans and so evade requirements about respect for debt repayment plans, consumers continue to be exploited by these forms of lending.

The latest figures released regarding Wonga’s lending suggested they had lent out £430m, with an average loan of £237. We compared a loan from Northern Community Bank to see how the figures stacked up

At Northern Community Bank we have sympathy with the 500 workers who have been made redundant with Wonga collapsing into administration, but our main concern are members of Burnley and Pendle’s community that have been, and continue to be charged eye watering rates of interest on loans.

We understand that there are situation where people need to borrow cash quickly, we say contact Northern Community Bank first, if you have already used a high interest lender like Wonga and would like to discuss re-financing a loan contact Northern Community Bank today.

  8. 3 Milestones in savings & loans for Community Bank

Saving and loan milestones remind Northern Community Bank of its place in community

Three milestones in savings & loans were reached this week at Northern Community Bank. As collective savings reached £6 million for the first time, our staff issued the 34,000th loan to an account holder and our overall lending to the community surpassed £50 million since 1982. It served as a pleasing reminder that the services we provide to the community continue to be much needed.

The collective savings balance is especially pleasing at a time when savings levels in the UK are at some of their lowest since the 1960’s, August 2018’s statistics suggest 36% of UK households have no savings at all. When Northern Community Bank was formed in 1982 as a Savers Group, before becoming Nelson Community Community Bank, one of the main aims was to promote thrift and provide a safe place to save.

Savings are a vital component in the running of a Community Bank. Whilst some account holders use Northern Community Bank to build savings, behind the scenes we use the collective pool of savings to issue affordable loans to the community at competitive rates of interest.

This is ‘People helping People’ in action, it really is win-win for the community with access to safe savings and affordable loans.

The second milestone is proof that the Community Bank model works. Roberta, Northern Community Bank’s Members Services Co-ordinator, processed our 34,000th loan earlier this week! We work extremely hard to assess affordability on every loan we grant to the community, it is a credit to every member of staff, board and volunteer that has enabled Northern Community Bank to reach the final milestone as we have now lent over £50 million since 1982.

At Northern Community Bank we promote the ‘Save as you Borrow’ Community Bank method, which means with every loan repayment a loan balance decreases and at the same time a small amount is added to the borrowers saving balance.

Many things have changed since we were created by 15 saving pioneers in 1982. With three town centre branches, 15 members of staff and the ability to manage accounts online or via the telephone.

Two things that has never changed at Northern Community Bank

We only operate to benefit this community

Northern Community Banks account holders are our biggest strength

    Thank you

  9. Saving & borrowing levels in the UK

The Office for National Statistics recently looked into saving and borrowing levels in the UK. According the Office for National Statistics

UK households have seen their outgoings surpass their income for the first time in nearly 30 years

At Northern Community Bank we encourage people in Burnley and Pendle to save by providing a safe, free and convenient place to build up saving pots. We know that it is difficult when bills are rising, wages are stagnant, people are on zero hour contracts or unexpected expenses arise. However our account holders tell us by putting a little away, as often as possible, it really does add up to help when life throws up an expense you just didn’t pencil in.

The latest statistics available showed that UK household spent more than they received annually. The last time that this happened was in 1988, however the amount households are overspending far exceed that of 1988; not even before the financial crash of 2008 has the UK hit these levels.

On average, each UK household spent or invested around £900 more than they received in income in 2017; amounting to almost £25 billion. Households’ outgoings last outstripped their income for a whole year in 1988, although the shortfall was much smaller at just £0.3 billion.

The Office for National Statistics pointed out that

To fund this shortfall, households either have to borrow – at which point they could be living beyond their means – or dip into their savings.

As the Money Charity has regularly pointed out over the last few years, saving levels are at their lowest since the 1960’s. This must means a large percentage of UK households are borrowing to cover the short fall.

We know that many turn to high interest lenders for unsecured loans or credit, such as pay day loans, pay weekly stores, doorstep lenders or guarantor loans which can end up costing the borrower eye watering amounts.

Northern Community Bank provide affordable loans for a variety of reasons, with decisions made on affordability. Our staff work tirelessly to assess whether a loan is affordable for a person and tailor a repayment plan that works for the borrower, which includes a small amount to be set aside to build up savings.

This save-as-you-borrow method is unique to Community banks and research has shown that 71% of borrowers at a Community bank go on to be regular savers.

    It is good to talk

If you would like to discuss your saving or borrowing needs then contact Northern Community Bank today. We have 5000 adult account holders, with collective savings of £5.9 million and throughout the last 36 years we have enabled the community to access over £47 million in affordable loans.

  10. Pay Weekly Carpets v Freedom to Shop Around

Pay weekly carpets v Freedom to shop around

When budgets are tight and your home needs a new carpet, sometimes people feel they are faced with a choice between the pay weekly carpet companies or sticking with a threadbare carpet that clearly needs replacing.

At Northern Community Bank we have helped people in the Burnley and Pendle communities to purchase new carpets, laminate, vinyl and lino for many years. When deciding how to finance a new carpet, the pay weekly companies that populate social media platforms such as Facebook appear to be a good option. No credit check or interest, it sounds too good to be true….?

When neighbours from our community apply for a home improvement loan at Northern Community Bank to finance new carpets we are often told it has given them the freedom to shop around and find the best deal. The different styles, quality of carpet and ability to do a deal with local suppliers has always been a bonus with the money to pay upfront.

Many of the pay weekly carpet companies proudly trumpet that it only cost £10 per week. There is normal a deposit of around £40-50, plus a fitters charge of £50-£70. In some cases we have spoken to account holders who have decided that putting aside the £100 deposit and fitter fee, whilst saving £10 per week at Community bank, took no time at all to purchase a brilliant quality carpet from a local supplier.

There are times when you need a new carpet immediately. Many find when moving into social housing that the properties come unfurnished or when a baby arrives in a family and starts to crawl. Northern Community Bank have always been on hand to help, and encourage people to get in contact with a friendly member of staff. As a not-for-profit company you will not be charged a fee to discuss your options, nor an application fee or deposit before you decide what to do. Community banks only operate to benefit the local community.

Some people will be happy with the pay weekly carpet companies, but just like the rent-to-own companies such as BrightHouse you should always sit back, read the terms and conditions, and consider your options before committing.

Is the carpet good quality, is the sample the carpet I will actually get, what would it cost for a similar carpet from a local supplier?

Be aware that you may not own the carpet until the balance is paid, which means late or non-payment could incur interest adding to the final balance or the flooring being removed from your property.

Everyone wants to feel proud of their household, we know that carpets can set the tone for your house; new flooring can really change the mood of the people who live in a home. If you are in situation where the flooring needs replacing and your options to finance are limited then contact Northern Community Bank today.

It is easy to apply for a loan, once you’ve provided us with the information we need we’ll try to make a decision as quickly as possible. We aim to deal with all applications within two days and, wherever possible, by the very next day. As soon as we’ve decided, the money will be transferred into your account, which puts you in the promising position of being able to start shopping for carpets straight away.

  11. Northern Community Bank invited to reception at Palace of Westminster

Northern Community Bank attended a reception held within the Palace of Westminster where members of the All Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on Community banks and representatives from the Lloyds Banking Group outlined their commitment to supporting the Credit Union movement.

The reception was hosted by Chair of the APPG on Credit Unions Jeremy Quin MP, Chair of the Credit Union Foundation Lord Roy Kennedy, and also heard speeches from the Economic Secretary to the Treasury John Glen MP, Minister for the Department for Work & Pensions Guy Opperman MP and Managing Director of Lloyds Bank and Bank of Scotland at Lloyds Banking Group Robin Bulloch.

Northern Community Bank were successful in a recent application to the Lloyds Banking Group Community banks Development Fund for £50,000, which has been used to open a branch within SPE Furnishings and employ a member of staff, whilst giving us the confidence to purchase and renovate new premises on St James’s Street in Burnley. The event was held a stone’s throw from both the sitting Houses of Commons and Lords, within the Strangers’ Room. Which saw representatives from Community banks who submitted successful grant applications, receive praise for both their grant proposals and positive effect on local communities.

Lloyds Banking Group’s funding forms part of their ‘Helping Britain Prosper Plan’, originally set up to provide £1 million each year to Community banks for four years. Following on from the success of the first four years, amazingly Lloyds has agreed to contribute another £1 million of additional funding in 2018 in partnership with The Credit Union Foundation.

John Glen MP assured the gathering that the Credit Union sector in the UK had the full support of all parties in Westminster and spoke about the funding from Lloyds Banking Group

I am committed to promoting the benefits of Credit Unions, there are over 400 of them across the country, serving 1.9 million members, and each plays a vital role for the people and community they serve. This funding from Lloyds is fantastic news for the sector and I hope that other banks follow by example.

The Lloyds Banking Group Community bank Development Fund has so far helped 66 Community banks lend over £20 million to its account holders, with this number set to exceed £25 million by the end of 2018. Robin Bulloch, Managing Director, Lloyds Bank & Bank of Scotland explained that consultation with Credit Unions across the country had identified the best way to support the sector was by providing funding to help us grow and strengthen the services we provide to local communities

As part of our ambition to be the leading supporter of the UK’s Community banks, we are contributing an additional £1 million to provide sustainable lending to even more Community banks, and in turn, their members. Over 66 Community banks have benefited from the funds support to date, helping over 400,000 members across the UK, underscoring our commitment to Help Britain Prosper.

Northern Community Bank’s Marketing and Development Officer, David, attended the reception on behalf of Northern Community Bank and was encouraged with the detail of the speeches

“It is great to hear that Credit Unions will continue to get the full support of MP’s, we need help with regulation that allows Credit Unions to continue to grow and serve our community. Coupling this with continued support promised by the Lloyds Banking Group we will continue to offer a service much needed in Burnley and Pendle. It was great to speak to Nick Williams, Lloyds Banking Group’s Northern Ambassador, regarding the different ways many Credit Unions are being supported in the North by the fund. Northern Community Bank are grateful for the £50,000 grant we received from the Lloyds Banking Group Credit Union Development Fund and are certain that it will enable us to increase the numbers of both savers and borrowers from our community.”

  12. Northern Community Bank created 36 years ago today

Northern Community Bank is 36 years old today. We started as Nelson Community bank on St George’s Day at St George’s social centre on Vaughan Street.

On April 23rd 1982, a Saver Group was launched with just 15 members and the first collection produced a total of £75 in share savings. We registered as Nelson Community Community Bank (NCCB) on August 31st in 1982.

The past year has sadly seen two of those founders members pass away, which has meant we have looked back with greater focus of the foundation those 15 founder members laid down to allow Northern Community Bank to grow into the multi branch organisation serving many more people in the Burnley and Pendle over the past 36 years.

As NCCU grew from its Vaughan Street base year on year it was agreed the services should be available to the whole of Pendle, and in October 2005 NCCU merged with Colne & District Community Bank to form Pendle Community Community Bank. On the 1st October 2013 Pendle Community Community Bank merged with Burnley Area Community Community Bank to create Northern Community Bank.

Now with well over 5,000 adult members who have collective savings of over £6.4 million, and since its creation we have lent out over £47 million to local people!

Northern Community Bank has seen many progressive developments since it was created. Originally operated by dedicated volunteers we have progressed to having 15 paid members of staff who are still assisted by volunteers. This enables Northern Community Bank to provide our savings and loan accounts to more people in the community from our three branches.

We have also made it easier to deposit at Northern Community Bank accepting standing orders, a range of benefit payments, cheques and cash. We increased the number of savings accounts after members expressed feedback relating to saving for Christmas, holidays and the need for budgeting for bills.

Developments on the loan application process has made it far easier and convenient for account holders to apply for loans; account holders can apply on the secure online accounts area, via telephone or in person at any of our branches.

As a financial co-operative that operates solely for the benefit of the local community we are always looking for ways to improve. If you have any suggestions please get in touch.

As always Northern Community Bank will also strive to push forward and this year will be no different. Thank you for your continued support, Northern Community Bank would not have developed without you – the account holders who own the Credit Union.
