  2. The perfect time to explore the UK with staycation holidays

The idea of getting away from it all has probably never felt more tempting. But as talk of ‘travel corridors’, ’quarantine’ and ‘isolation’ dominates the headlines, all the extra baggage that currently comes with international travel makes jetting off this year, for many, a non-starter.

Maybe a staycation wasn’t exactly what you had planned. But then nothing much has gone to plan over the last year, has it?

At Northern Community Bank, we are big believers in making the most out of any situation. And with that in mind, we believe this is the perfect opportunity to jump in a car, camper or caravan and explore our great, beautiful British isle when the current restrictions are lifted.

Swapping holidays abroad for holidays UK

You don’t have to travel too far either in order to find a nice little place to rest and recharge. Blackpool, Southport, Morecambe, Scarborough and Filey all offer idyllic beach retreats. It may be more ‘chippy on the seafront’ than ‘sangria on the sand’ but who doesn’t love fish and chips by the sea?

Hiking became the nation’s favourite pastime during lockdown. Why not take the new walking boots on a week-long trek around the Lake District, or for those seeking an even more adventurous break, how about taking on the national three peaks?

If you are happy going a bit further afield, Devon and Cornwall are sun-kissed southern havens boasting gorgeous coastlines, endless views and a mouthwatering selection of restaurants.

Northern Community Bank ready to make last minute holidays UK a reality

Wherever you choose to go, Northern Community Bank is on hand to help keep your finances in check – we know full well how addictive those 2p machines in Coral Island can be. We also know that while UK breaks are a low cost alternative to international getaways, they do still cost money. And if you’re looking for last minute ‘holidays UK’ then getting the money together quick enough can sometimes prove difficult.

Northern Community Bank offers ethical, affordable loans with interest tailored to your financial situation. This means you’re able to spread the cost of a holiday over a longer period. And with our quick response time on loan applications you won’t miss out on any cheap UK breaks you have managed to find.

Holidays abroad will come back – and we’ll be here to help you finance those – but for now, holidays UK are a fine alternative.

If you’re wanting to have a chat about financing your staycation holiday, then our Burnley, Nelson and Colne branches are all open. We do please ask that you wear a face covering when entering the buildings in line with government guidelines. As always, we are available by telephone on 01282 691333.

  4. Martyna Graduates From CU Futures

A huge congratulations is in order as Martyna graduates from CU Futures at the ABCUL’s annual conference.

This year one of Northern Community Bank’s very own, Martyna Styzinska, graduated from the CU Futures programme at the annual Association of British Credit Unions conference, held at The Midland Hotel in Manchester in March.

The ABCUL conference is the biggest event in the Credit Union calendar, which hosts 350 individuals, representing over 70% of credit unions across Great Britain. Not only did Martyna have the chance to graduate at the event, she also was given the amazing opportunity to be part of the opening ceremony of the ABCUL AGM whereby she read the Credit Union Invocation prayer.

This prayer has been a staple part of the itinerary for many years, although, during the AGM that followed Credit Unions voted to remove the Invocation prayer to replace it with something more inclusive. It was a great honour for Martyna to represent Northern Community Bank and read this for the final time.

The CU Futures programme that Martyna completed over the last 12 months combines an industry standard qualification with personal development, on the job learning, and networking at a series of high profile events – all giving meaningful development support to future Credit Union leaders. The program is highly recognised for its innovative impact in supporting and developing young people across the British Credit Union movement.

Martyna speaks incredibly highly of her time on the programme and said her favourite part was hard to choose, although she had to say it was

Traveling to Dublin to learn about how other Credit Unions work and operate over there. It was so much fun seeing how similar and different we are compared to them. I learned so much from that trip.

Observing and understanding how other Credit Unions operate helps to contribute hugely to the way Northern Community Bank operates strategically. Therefore, Martyna’s learning gained from her travels is extremely valuable.

The eagerly awaited graduation ceremony was the highlight of the Saturday evening for many Northern Community Bank staff members. Martyna graduates from CU Futures programme was witnessed with a great source of pride for both the Board of Directors and staff of Northern Community Bank, as all were aware of the hard work she’s put in this year.

When asked what Martyna’s future prospects were following her graduation she said

“One thing I know for sure is that I will carry on putting myself out there and saying yes to more things and any opportunities that come up in the future. I love learning new things and wherever I go I always bring back something to my Community Bank. I also love being part of the Community Bank world and I see myself working here for a long time as it’s one of the most rewarding jobs.”

We see a bright future in Martyna as an upcoming Community Bank leader – Huge congratulations for your fantastic achievement!

  5. How much time do you spend looking for the best bank loans?

‘The best things in life are free’. Hard to argue with that. Family. Friends. An afternoon stroll up Pendle Hill in the summer sunshine. Always nice to finish off that last one with a quick drink in a pub though, isn’t it? Maybe a slice of homemade meat and potato pie, too…and dessert.

Money, for better or for worse, is an integral part of our lives. And sometimes we need a little helping hand to get us to where we want to be. Whether it be cash for a new car, money for a summer holiday or a few extra quid for a drink and a pie. That’s why there’s nothing wrong with searching high and low for the best bank loans out there. All we ask is that you give Northern Community Bank a fair crack of the whip when you are looking. Here’s why.

The world is full of unscrupulous lenders. Flashy deals promising the earth, but in reality delivering exorbitant interest rates and months of financial insecurity. Northern Community Bank brings to the table, not only decades of experience dealing with everything from savings to best bank loans, but also an honest and principled service. We are an ethical not-for-profit lender, which quite simply means we care about account holders, not balance sheets. Take the interest rate that other lenders advertise. These are generally representative, meaning that only 51% of applicants need to be granted this rate to allow the company to advertise it. The rate Northern Community Bank advertise is the rate you pay. And through these affordable interest rates – that are always tailored to suit an individual’s financial needs – we make sure you get what you need in the short-term without worrying about surprise payments in the long-term.

Another point worth remembering is that when it comes to hunting down the best bank loans, banks and other lenders don’t particularly care for small value ones. At Northern Community Bank we offer loans for less than £1,000 all the way up to £15,000, and we look to turn around applications within one to two days. The best bank loans should not only come with fair interest rates, they should arrive into your account as quickly as possible.

If you’re worried about a less than stellar credit score, don’t be. Credit scores aren’t the be all and end all when it comes to applications here, as our loan decisions are made by real people who understand real life. We also report to credit reference companies, meaning as long you meet the agreed payment schedule you’ll be giving your credit score a nice boost as well.

Wading through all the different deals for best bank loans can be a tiring and confusing experience. Call us on 01282 619333 and we’ll answer any questions you have – for free. Right, we’re off for a walk to the pub…I mean up Pendle.

  6. Northern Community Bank commended for the success of another busy year at the annual 38th AGM

On Friday 6th of March the 38th Annual General Meeting (AGM) took place at Turf Moor, Burnley. Whereby, account holders gathered to hear news of an excellent financial year for Northern Community Bank and its advancement in providing ethical financial services to the local community.

Our president Gerard Spain reported 2019 as being “our launch pad year” due to the excitement and challenges we faced primarily due to the launch of the

Family Loan and Saving Scheme which has allowed us to service a selection of the community which we previously was unable to serve.

This has contributed hugely to the 35% growth of our loan book, in just one financial year, paired with a 36% increase in membership.

To reiterate the financial achievements of Northern Community Bank year please see the below key figures:

    February 2019February 2020

    Assets£7.5 M£9.5 M

As Northern Community Bank is a not-for-profit financial cooperative owned by our members the profits attained will be paid in the form of dividend to members.

This has contributed hugely to the growth of our loan book and the 36% increase in membership. Mr. Spain continued to speak highly of a further new saving product, the Fixed Term Deposit Account,

This offers a very competitive return of 2% AER on deposits between £5K and £85K.” This saving product was launched in January and account holders have already deposited over £2 Million.

The Community Bank membership agreed a dividend rate of 1% for both adult and junior dividend in addition to 2% adult loan interest rebate. It was recognised to be well above the average of 0.4% on easy access savings accounts.

Account holders heard a speech by Antony Higginbotham, Member of Parliament for Burnley. Whereby he shared that this was the first AGM he had attended as a MP. He shared that

The growth of the Community Bank is a testament to the dedication of the staff and Board of Northern Community Bank.

The evening concluded with a speech from Robert Kelly, CEO of ABCUL our governing body, he informed account holders of Northern Community Bank that

“The recent ABCUL Town hall consultations had four themes; Sustainability, Relevance, Collaboration and Purpose. I can tell you that

Northern Community Bank is all of these

Robert then gave his appreciation for the time and friendship Northern Community Bank gives to the Community Bank movement.

  7. Pull up a deck chair and let’s talk about holiday loans online

Is it ever going to stop raining? Probably not.
Storms, floods, gale force winds – let’s face it, the only chance any of us have of seeing consistent sun again is to get off this rain-soaked island as soon as possible. And with the Easter break just around the corner, there’s nothing stopping you from packing up the kids and heading straight for the airport. As long as you’ve got a few Euros in the bank. If you haven’t, don’t throw the holiday brochures out of the window just yet because applying for holiday loans online is a great way of ensuring you get the break you deserve.

Destination numero uno for holiday loans online? Northern Community Bank, naturally. Northern Community Bank would always advise on saving for holidays, however, we are aware that unexpected costs can quickly throw our best laid plans into chaos. And that’s why we offer a holiday loans online service that enables families and individuals to enjoy their breaks without breaking the bank.

Now, booking a loan is probably not going to be as exciting as booking your holiday. But, we can certainly make it as stress-free as sipping pina coladas by the pool. Let’s start with those pesky repayments. Northern Community Bank’s affordable interest rates mean this does not have to be your last holiday until 2025. Repayments are tailored to suit an individual’s circumstances meaning you won’t be getting any nasty surprises upon your return.

If you’re wanting to get away sooner rather than later then you’ll be pleased to know we turn around loan applications quicker than a ray of (sun)light. This means that those of you on the lookout for last minute cheap holiday deals do not need to turn to expensive lenders in order to get you on board. Northern Community Bank are committed to have a decision for you within two days as long as all the required information is present. Decisions, more often than not, are made within the day though.

We do understand that searching for ‘holiday loans online’ is sometimes the only option, but as mentioned earlier, our main objective here is to help account holders achieve financial stability. And that’s where savings come in Northern Community Bank’s ‘Save While You Borrow’ scheme is a great way of building up savings without even realising. Anybody who takes a loan out with us is immediately given a savings account with a minimum amount to be paid in every month. This builds up and acts as collateral against the loan. It also means that while you’re paying off this holiday, you’re already saving for the next one.

Call our five star staff on 01282 691333 and they’ll happily talk you through this scheme, how to apply for holiday loans online or anything else finance related. And hopefully the only umbrella you’ll be having to deal with soon is the one bobbing about in your cocktail.

  8. Northern Community Bank can help you access loans without bank account

Hands up if you don’t have a bank account. If you’ve just raised your arm up in the air, you may well be surprised to learn that there are thousands of other people in this exact same situation.
In fact, according to the Financial Conduct Authority, there were almost 1.5 million people without bank accounts across the UK in 2017.

Why is this? Well, firstly, they can be a bit of a nightmare to open.  People with no or poor credit histories are common cases, as are those who are unable to satisfy the minimum requirements of a certain account. Secondly, and quite simply, a large number of people just don’t trust certain banks. That’s all good and well, but what if you need a few extra quid to put towards a holiday or school uniforms to buy? Surely it’s impossible to get loans without bank account credentials? It actually isn’t. However the problem is, this is when people end up finding themselves on the doorsteps of expensive lenders.

The last thing we want at Northern Community Bank is people turning to these types of lenders when searching for that ‘loans without bank account’ solution. The main reason being once you start down that slippery high cost borrowing slope it can be a difficult journey back to the top; with high interest rates and hidden fees leading to serious repayment headaches. The good news is, there are other options available. Last year, the government’s financial inclusion report stated that it was “committed to helping all consumers across the UK access suitable banking products and supports a variety of options across the financial services market…working closely with industry to improve access to basic bank accounts, which are specifically designed to support the unbanked, but also work to promote awareness of local credit unions.”

At Northern Community Bank, you do not need a bank account to take out a loan. Not only that, you can trust us to do what is best for your situation. We are run on a ‘not-for-profit’ basis, so instead of paying a profit to external shareholders, we use the money we make to reward account holders and improve services.

When applying for a loan, another big concern for people is the dreaded poor credit history. Instead of worrying about what has been, contact a friendly member of staff at one of our branches in Burnley, Nelson or Colne and we can help you start planning for the future. We don’t rely on credit scores alone to make loan decisions, and we don’t rely on computers either. After you apply for a loan, one of our highly trained members of staff will review your application to see if you qualify. Even if you don’t have a solid history of repaying loans, or you’ve had a few problems in the past, there is still a chance you’ll be approved.

It’s Northern Community Bank’s personal touch that helps us stand out from the crowd. Getting loans without bank account verification is a lot more straightforward than you’d think. Give Northern Community Bank a ring on 01282 691333 and let us show you.

  9. If you’re searching ‘best bank for a car loan’…why not take a trip to Northern Community Bank?

You’re driving through town. The sun is shining, your favourite song has just come on the radio. It’s going to be a good day…And then the ‘check engine’ light comes on, and it’s flashing…red.

Cars are a wonderful luxury, when they’re not driving us round the bend, or to financial despair. If it’s time to send your beloved motor to the big scrapyard in the sky, you’re probably going to be on the hunt for the best bank for a car loan.

If that is the case, put your foot on the brake and step into the Northern Community Bank showroom. No shady salesmen setting you on the road to ruin; just up front, honest information about how we can help keep you on the right track when financing a set of new wheels.

If you’ve been scouring the internet looking for the best bank for a car loan applications, you may well have come across of a whole host of car finance deals. Our advice… take a minute to look at what they are offering. The problem with car finance is that more often than not you could end up paying back way more than necessary, with exorbitant interest rates and hefty hidden fees. Even if you’re the kind of person who doesn’t mind throwing money out of sunroofs, it’s definitely worth noting that with a number of finance deals the car is not yours while repayments are being made.

For instance, if you go down the hire purchase route, you do not own the car until the final payment is paid meaning missed payments could lead to you losing the car; while choosing the personal contract purchase option means that at the end of the contract you either have to return the car, pay the resale value and keep it or use the resale value towards buying a new car.

This is why personal loans are generally a safer and more affordable option. And why Northern Community Bank should always be near to, if not top of the list when you’re looking for the best bank for a car loan. One of the main reasons for this is the fact Northern Community Bank is a not-for-profit organisation meaning we are likely to be cheaper than many alternative lenders.

The interest rate we advertise is the interest rate all applicants pay if accepted. On the other hand, the majority of car dealers advertise ‘Representative APR’, which means this rate only has to be offered to 51% of applicants. And these typically start at 12.9% Representative APR, which is more than we would charge for a loan of more than £3,000.

Another huge advantage of a Northern Community Bank loan is our ‘Save as you Borrow’ scheme. When you take out a loan with us, there is a minimum saving amount that builds up to act as collateral against the loan. You’d be surprised how quickly these savings do build up…a great way to develop better saving habits.

So the next time you’re searching for the best bank for a car loan applications, make sure you put Northern Community Bank in your sat. nav. We have branches in Colne, Nelson and Burnley and it costs nothing to come in and have a chat with our staff. In fact, we’ll happily give you a free quotation without the need of going through a credit check. Your very own test drive.

  11. UK strategy for financial wellbeing to improve millions of lives.

The government is encouraging Britain to stop being reliant on credit cards and become a nation of financially savvy savers by 2030. To achieve this, the Money and Pension Service (MaPS) have identified five agendas for financial change within the UK and are launching an ambitious strategy for financial wellbeing to achieve the goals they have set. This made Northern Community Bank look at our offerings to see how we fit in and contribute to achieving these targets.

    The targets identified are:

    • Financial Foundations: 6.8 million children and young people getting meaningful financial education – an increase of 2 million from 2019.
    • Nation of Savers: 16.7 million working age people who are struggling and squeezing saving regularly – an increase of 2 million.
    • Credit Counts: 2 million fewer people often using credit cards to pay for food or bills.
    • Better Debt Advise: 2 million more people getting the debt advise they need; currently only 32% of those who need debt advice obtain it.
    • Future Focus: 28.6 million people understanding enough to plan for their later lives, and during them – an increase of 5 million.

What this means in relation to Northern Community Bank?

Northern Community Bank is an ethical financial not-for-profit cooperative, therefore is fully supportive of this vision for improved financial wellbeing within the UK.

Although a lot of our products and services already support the UK strategy for financial wellbeing of our account holders at Northern Community Bank. As we offer affordable credit to those that need it, whilst encouraging account holders to save with us. With a number of different savings accounts and loans options to suit all, these accounts are beneficial for all walks of life.

Christmas Saving Account – This account enables you to save throughout the year but withdrawals can only be made during November and December. This means that Christmas savings really are just for the Christmas period reducing the need to be reliant on credit at this festive time of year. This year our account holders saved £150,000, 20% of that being from Family Loan and saving scheme account holders alone. This is amazing to say the scheme has only been operating for 6 months!

Young Savers – With over 860 young savers accounts for children and young people, under the age of 18 years old, our account gives young people the opportunity to learn how to manage money and therefore helps to build financial foundations for their future.

Fixed Term Deposit Account – Our new one year fixed term deposit with a highly competitive interest rate encouraging account holders to have a future focus for their finances. This could be budgeting for their retirement or the deposit for a house. Whilst supporting other members of the community by allowing us to issue further loans through the cooperative pooling of money.

Saving As You Borrow – Northern Community Bank also offers affordable credit in the form of a loan to individuals who need it, these loans are issues ethically with repayments made to suit you. When obtaining a loan from Northern Community Bank all our account are required to save as they borrow, this is to encourage better saving habits whilst facilitating us providing more loans.

Why is this strategy needed you may ask?

Caroline Siarkiewicz, acting chief executive of the Money and Pensions Service, said:

“Financial wellbeing underpins personal health and happiness but it doesn’t happen by chance.

We know that in the UK alone 11.5 million people have less than £100 in savings to fall back on (particularly millennials aged between 20-30), 9 million people often use credit to pay for food or essential bills and 5.3 million children aren’t getting a meaningful financial education. Therefore demonstrating a need for change in financial wellbeing.”

Sir Hector Sants, Chair of the Money and Pensions Service, said:

Understanding and acting on these financial occurrences effecting millions of people, is therefore a necessary and appropriate strategy to improving financial wellbeing on a national scale.

  12. Northern Community Bank can always be relied on when it comes to loans for families

One word that means a lot to us here at Northern Community Bank is ‘family’.

When Nelson Northern Community Bank launched in 1982, it did so with a mere 15 account holders. While a lot has changed in the 38 years since – including a subtle name change – family is still at the heart of what we do. Our household may have grown to more than 9,500 account holders but we keep things tight knit around here and that is why providing loans for families remains a cornerstone of our work.

    Managing the family budget

We understand that keeping to a family budget can be hard work, and that ‘loans for families’ are simply a necessary part of life sometimes.

How difficult is it trying not to overspend at the supermarket for a start? Kids throwing bars of chocolate into the trolley. You staring at the bars of chocolates, shouting at the kids, and then throwing a bar of chocolate in for yourself…along with a multi-pack of Monster Munch. Add in school uniforms and summer holidays, and that’s all before the dreaded unexpected expenses. From car repairs to broken boilers, pet emergencies to a sudden job loss; the second you think you’re getting straight, the universe invariably ends up throwing a spanner in the works. Northern Community Bank staff won’t be able to fix the brakes on your motor or stop you from filling your trolley with chocolate but they can ease these financial burdens with affordable loans for families.

Take our family loan and saving scheme for instance, which allows you to borrow up to £500 – ideal for an emergency expense. For this, we assess affordability with no credit check and aim to have a decision for you within one day. Once granted, the money will be in your account that same day. Child benefits are used for repayments with a small percentage of this money placed in a separate savings account ready for a rainy (broken down car) day.

We specialise in loans for families but we also provide a variety of saving accounts tailored towards families.

The Christmas countdown is already on

Ready to start talking about Christmas? You’re probably still mince-pied out from December but Christmas 2020 will be here before you know it, and Northern Community Bank wants you prepared. Our Christmas Club is an ideal option for families wanting to plan ahead.

The account enables you to save throughout the year but withdrawals can only be made during November and December. This means that when you start your shopping on Christmas Eve you’ll have plenty of money to buy all the gifts and mince pies you’ll need.

Look to the future with young savers

When people think about ‘loans for families’ they automatically think about mum and dad borrowing money to help pay for things. At Northern Community Bank we recognise the importance of youngsters learning the value of money and that’s why we started our young savers accounts.

These accounts can be opened by anyone including parents, grandparents or friends and give the little saver in your family the invaluable experience of learning how to manage money from an early age. All young savers accounts are converted into full adult accounts at 18 years old.
