  2. How Northern Community Bank can help you with Christmas loans on benefits

The annual countdown to Christmas will forever see people divided into two camps. In one corner we have the ‘Bah Humbug Brigade’. Christmas adverts in October? Are you joking? This group refuses to talk about anything festive until we’re deep into December, and even then, you probably won’t ever catch them wearing a Santa hat.

In the other corner, we have our ‘Excitable Elves’. Did you know on September 16th it was 100 days until Christmas? They did. Belting out ‘I Wish It Could Be Christmas Everyday’ from their cars in October, this jolly bunch takes great pride in letting everybody know just how much they love this most magical time of year…all year. Whichever camp you fall into, it would be remiss not to do a little financial planning ahead of a season where costs can quickly snowball.

    Unwrapping the cost of Christmas

With Christmas 2020 not quite as merry as it should have been, we have plenty of making up to do this December. And Northern Community Bank wants to help ensure celebrations this year live long in the memory. Christmas is undoubtedly one of the most joyous times of the year. But for some families, the pressure of paying for presents, parties and pigs in blankets can make the whole festive period a little stressful.

At Northern Community Bank, we aim to provide Christmas loans for anyone who needs to borrow, including those who are on benefits. As a matter of fact, we specialise in helping people who are looking for ‘Christmas loans on benefits’ because we know just how difficult it can be applying for these types of loans.  Our assessments are based on affordability, not the type of income you are in receipt of. Not on that, loan repayments can be made by standing order or a direct benefit payment such as Child Benefit, Universal Credit or Tax Credits.

Successfully applying for Christmas loans on benefits can make a huge difference to families. They allow the cost to be spread out over a longer, more affordable period. This is ideal for those who love to get their Christmas shopping done nice and early. And with talk of food shortages for the rest of the year gathering pace, we all might be heading to the supermarkets a little earlier this year on the hunt for turkeys.

Why Northern Community Bank is always Christmas number one for loans

Lots of our members are eager to get presents bought, wrapped and shipped off to Father Christmas as early as possible, therefore applications for Christmas loans on benefits in September never come unexpectedly to us at Northern Community Bank. We can provide both small and larger loans to suit everybody’s Christmas.

Our £500 Family Loan and Saving Scheme is a fantastic option for anybody needing a helping hand in the run up to the big day. This scheme allows you to use part of your Child Benefit to make the loan repayments and put a little amount in savings for a rainy day. Any surplus can be transferred back to you the very same day it’s received unless you want to make use of one of our other brilliant savings accounts such as our Christmas savings account. For this loan we assess your affordability with no credit check, and there’s no early payment penalty fees meaning you can pay this off as soon as you want and get started saving for next Christmas.

Complete a simple application online or pop into one of our offices in Burnley, Nelson or Colne for a chat about ‘Christmas loans on benefits‘. We haven’t got the decorations up just yet, but it won’t be long.

  3. How community banks are providing loans like Provident Financial

Controversial credit company Provident Financial withdrew its doorstep lending operation last month. The company had been the subject of numerous compensation claims over recent years, from customers claiming to have been “mis-sold” loans. The termination of their doorstep lending service, which had been in operation for 140 years, has reportedly left as many as 300,000 UK borrowers on the lookout for alternative credit. The good news for borrowers looking for loans like Provident is there are plenty of options out there; some a lot better than others.

Provident’s loans tended to be for small amounts at relatively high interest rates. Jumping from one high cost payday lender to another will only result in kicking your finance problems down the road. That’s why family-friendly community banks across the country are now striving to help fill the gap left by Provident, but in a fairer, more ethical way.

Why high cost payday lenders are not the answer

Thousands of people who don’t have access to alternative credit, like those without bank accounts, now find themselves at real risk of running up even more debt with unscrupulous online payday lenders offering loans like Provident or even worse, illegal loan sharks.

We are urging anybody from this area who finds themselves in a situation like this to contact Northern Community Bank immediately and let us talk you through your options.  We have saved our local community hundreds of thousands of pounds over the years when compared to loans like Provident, and we continue to be committed to providing affordable borrowing opportunities for all our account holders. Provident themselves are even signposting their former borrowers to seek out help from credit unions.

Are you looking for a loan? Community banks are community savings and loans providers. They can offer affordable loans to people within their local area.

“Community banks are often able to lend to people whose circumstances might mean they struggle to get a loan from other lenders. They often have branches as well as phone and online support.”

Community banks guarantee cheaper loans over Provident

Loans like Provident offered are never in the best interest of the applicant. They’re in the best interest of the company offering them. Profit is the name of the game after all. As Northern Community Bank is a not-for-profit co-operative, our attention is focused solely on the applicant and their financial situation. That’s why we’re able to offer such competitive interest rates. We’re more than just affordable interest rates though. We pride ourselves on unbeatable service, too. Our experienced staff are on hand every step of the way to guide you through the process. We provide a ‘Save As You Borrow’ scheme in order to create financial stability for the account holder. And we even offer a free bereavement fund benefit on savings and loans.

So before you jump from one high cost lender to another, speak to a member of staff at any of our branches in Burnley, Nelson or Colne by calling 01282 691333 or apply online here, and give us the chance to put your mind at rest.

  4. Why Northern Community Bank’s low interest loans are anything but scary

There is a common misconception shared by some that loans are scary. That borrowing money from a lender will see your financial woes increase as you dig yourself further into a black hole of debt. This could not be further from the truth.

Loans are designed to help people, to provide a financial lifeline when spiralling costs begin to outweigh income. It’s a fact of life that there’s no escaping costs. And, yes, that can seem scary. Take the summer holidays for instance. Holidays abroad, staycations, new uniforms, days out. It may only last a few weeks, but all the activities and expenses that come with it soon add up. Maybe you’re using the time to give a flagging garden a facelift – a new hot tub perhaps, or a spot of landscaping. Whatever your reason for needing to spend a little extra money, it’s nice to know you don’t have to do it all on your own.

Low interest loans allow us to spread all these costs over a manageable period, affording you a little breathing space while you enjoy quality time with the family…or in your new garden.

Free loan quotes – no pressure, no hassle

Do you know how much it costs to speak with a member of staff at Northern Community Bank? Absolutely nothing. Even better, we also offer free loan quotes. This isn’t because we’re trying to get people through the door, or trick them into signing away their souls. It’s because community banks are ethical lenders who want to help their communities by helping the people who live in them.

Northern Community Bank is a not-for profit co-operative meaning we don’t charge extortionate rates of interest like some high interest lenders. With us, the rate you see advertised is the rate you pay – none of that Representative APR smoke and mirrors where low interest loans on the surface can quickly become eye-wateringly large repayments. Our aim is to help people take control of their finances. We want what’s best for you. It’s why we encourage people to shop around a bit if they’re unsure; see what other lenders are offering.

We can never guarantee the lowest rates, but what we do promise is low interest loans, and a safe pair of hands that will guide you through the process.

How long does it take to grant low interest loans?

Northern Community Bank understands that where money is concerned, time is generally of the essence. If you apply for a loan online, we aim to have a decision for you within 24 working hours. We’ve already mentioned free loan quotes. Add to that no application fees, a free bereavement fund benefit, and no early settlement fees; and we’re confident that by the time you’re repaying one of our low interest loans the last thing you’ll be worrying about is money.

Pop into one of our Nelson, Colne or Burnley branches, where our friendly, highly qualified staff will be more than happy to provide you with all the latest information on loans and savings.

  5. Let Northern Community Bank help with school clothing costs

The summer holidays are here and you know what that means…the ‘Back to School’ signs are already up.

A parent’s work is truly never done. No sooner have you finished reading their end of year report card, your mind is already planning for a new term. And planning is key, because school equipment does not come cheap. The new uniform, sports kits, stationary, musical instruments. You don’t need a calculator (although they probably will) to work out that all these things are going to cost a tidy sum. And we haven’t even mentioned the family summer holiday.

Parents with children in state maintained schools spent on average £337 a year on school uniform for each secondary school child, and £315 a year for each primary school child, according to a 2020 survey by charity The Children’s Society of 1,000 parents across the UK. That’s more than three times what parents told The Children’s Society they felt was a reasonable cost for primary (£85) and secondary (£105) uniform.

Why Northern Community Bank’s Family Loan & Saving Scheme could be just the answer

Northern Community Bank has a long history when it comes to offering help with school clothing costs…as well as everything else associated with summer holiday spending.

Our Family Loan and Saving Scheme has enabled thousands of local families to go out and buy items such as school uniforms at a time when money may be tight. The scheme allows all families/individuals in receipt of child benefit to receive a loan of up to £500, on condition that benefit payments be paid directly from the HMRC to the Northern Community Bank. The whole child benefit can be used to make the repayments, however we tend to work on agreeing a lesser amount once an affordability check is carried out. The surplus amount can then be placed in a savings account ensuring when ‘school’s out for summer next’, you won’t be out of pocket.

Even if you already have a Family Loan with Northern Community Bank, it’s worth checking to see if you are eligible for a top up. This can be re-used to increase your existing loan balance, and can be applied for once a number of repayments have been made.

Always do your homework before applying for a loan

With so many lenders out there, and so many different figures flying around, it can sometimes feel like a lesson in finance is required before deciding who to use. While Northern Community Bank will more often than not be top of the class when it comes to competitive interest rates, it’s our community ethos that really makes us stand out from the rest of the crowd.

Family has always been at the heart of what we stand for, and it’s a real source of pride that we’re able to say we have stopped thousands of little ones from going without over the years. As a not-for-profit cooperative our sole focus is on making account holders happy, not shareholders. Whether it’s help with school clothing costs, a new car or a family holiday, Northern Community Bank will tailor loan repayments to suit your personal and financial circumstances.

No homework this week, but if you would like a quick refresher on how we can help with school clothing costs click here or apply for our Family Loan & Saving Scheme online for a quick decision within 24 working hours.

  7. Come to Us for Help With School Uniform Costs

It has been an unusual few months when it comes to children going to school, with the official summer holidays just starting we know there’s one issue which is bound to already be worrying some parents, and that’s the cost of purchasing a brand new set of school uniforms when schools are back in September.

Here at Northern Community Bank we provide help with school uniform costs because we realise just how difficult paying for uniforms can be. It’s hard enough for parents with just one child, but two or three kids needing new blazers, trousers, skirts, socks and shirts can soon mount up to become pretty much unaffordable.

That’s why we’re happy to provide help with school uniform costs. The alternative is for some parents to spend the entire summer break worry about affording all the clothing they need to buy, rather than relaxing and enjoying the time spent with their children. Our help with school uniforms costs doesn’t simply cover the expense of buying uniforms – by putting cash in the bank accounts of parents it puts them in the powerful position of being able to shop around at leisure for the best possible deal, safe in the knowledge that they’ve got the costs covered.

At Northern Community Bank we have two loan application options for school uniforms. Borrow up to £500 with the quick Family Loan & Saving Scheme application or Standard Loan application for larger loans over £500.

In the past, many parents may have worried about going into debt in order to buy school uniforms and the kind of interest rates and extra fees charged by many lenders mean that this kind of worry is very easy to understand. We however are an ethical lender and we also run as a not for profit co-operative, that means we’re able to offer our account holders the lowest possible interest rates. It also means that we structure their repayment plans to be affordable rather than profitable, and offer the same highly competitive rates to every single one of our borrowers.

If you need help with school uniform costs then get in touch with us and you’ll find yourself dealing with a friendly human being that can discuss with you your options rather than a computer or a distant call centre. Once you’ve provided us with the information we need we’ll try to make a decision as quickly as possible. We understand how vital help with school uniform costs can be and so we aim to deal with all applications within 24 working hours and wherever possible, by the very next day. As soon as we’ve decided, the money will be transferred into your account, which puts you in the happy position of being able to start shopping for school uniform items without having sleepless nights over how much they’re going to cost. As you pay back your loan, a small amount will be set aside for your savings, so when you’ve finished paying you’ll enjoy the added bonus of having seen your savings grow. These savings are great for when School Uniform time comes around again. Don’t we all know that a school year really does fly by.

So if you need help with School Uniform costs don’t suffer in silence all summer. Apply for an affordable Northern Community Bank School Uniform Loan today.

At Northern Community Bank we have two loan application options for school uniforms. Borrow up to £500 with the quick Family Loan & Saving Scheme application or Standard Loan application for larger loans over £500.

  8. Half way through the year? this only means one thing…the countdown to Christmas has begin

July is here, signifying we’re half way through the year and summer 2021 is well and truly underway. While many of us are still frantically trying to plan the get-a-way we’ve been craving for the last 15243932 months, not many of us would’ve had a single thought for Christmas 2021.

We know that planning for Christmas this early can seem like a great big unnecessary financial headache but just think how smug you will feel once November is here. Let’s not forget “time flies when you’re having fun” in the sun…

If you don’t know where to start with this festive financial plan, opening a Christmas club account with Northern Community Bank isn’t a bad idea. This account was created specifically to help our account holders that struggle to save for this famously expensive period, ensuring account holders could save throughout the year with cash withdrawals limited to November and December. This means that your Christmas savings really are spent on your festivities and not an unexpected bill or an ‘emergency’ takeaway.

We’re super happy to see that our Christmas club is already totalling over £150k from local account holders, over £50k of that being from Family Loan & Saving Scheme account holders alone.

This just goes to show that making either spontaneous or regular deposits can really rack up a healthy savings pot. One that you can dive in to head first when the festive season approaches, guilt free and with no financial money worries about how you are going to get through another January living off baked beans.

So before the baked bean dread occurs. Why not start thinking about your usual Christmas costs? Is it 300…400… 500 pounds or maybe it’s even more?

Whatever it is, it’s worth factoring in these costs to your weekly or monthly budget now before it’s too late.

Saving £1.75 a day means you would have a healthy sum of £300 by Christmas Day

Saving £2.33 a day means you would have a healthy sum of £400 by Christmas Day

Saving £2.91 a day means you would have a healthy sum of £500 by Christmas Day

    Figures correct from 05.07.21

The clock is ticking… open a Christmas club account today and join thousands of local people already saving for a Christmas of all Christmas’

  9. Everything you need to know about poor credit loans

Northern Community Bank specialises in poor credit loans

Some things in life are quite simply unavoidable. Death, taxes, rain in June.

You can add poor credit to that list as well. Try as we may to keep our financial records spotless, how often are we left head in hands over the slightest monetary indiscretion? One late payment, and just like that life can become an annoying series of financial obstacles for years to come. Bad credit can prevent you from being able to rent a home, agree finance for a car, access loans with lower interest rates, access loans full stop. If you’ve been turned down for loans elsewhere due to a poor credit rating then all hope is not lost. Northern Community Bank specialises in poor credit loans, allowing us to put a spring in the step of account holders as they jump right on over those pesky obstacles.

Why payday lenders are not the answer for poor credit loans

Fixing a bad credit score can take time. Unfortunately, time isn’t generally a luxury people can afford when money is involved. Maybe you have unpaid bills that require sorting sooner rather than later. Maybe the car’s started making a noise you’ve never heard before. Maybe you’ve just had enough of 2021 and it’s time to take the family away.

Loans are sometimes a necessity, but a poor credit history can end up making them more of a hindrance than a help. Credit scores, given by credit reference agencies to lenders such as banks, loan and credit card companies, are one of the ways they assess, and more often than not, reject credit applications. This is why some people end up on the doorsteps of payday lenders where high interest rates are commonplace.

At Northern Community Bank, we understand that people are human; that sometimes payments can be missed accidentally or for genuine reasons. That’s why we look beyond the numbers when it comes to poor credit loans, dealing with each application on merit. Our loan decisions are made by real people, not computers, meaning your credit score isn’t the be-all and end-all. We will always look at the bigger picture, taking into account personal circumstances now, not just from your past.

How is Northern Community Bank different from other lenders?

The main difference between Northern Community Bank and other lenders is the fact we are a not-for-profit financial cooperative, which means we don’t have any shareholders to please. This enables us to charge competitive rates of interest that revolve around fairness and affordability, rather than profit. It’s why we don’t offer different interest rates on loans purely based on your credit history. It’s why you will never be charged more or less for borrowing money because of your credit score. And because we know speed is of the essence when it comes to loans, we always aim to have a decision for you within 24 working hours.

Fair poor credit loans do exist, and they can make life a lot easier; speak to our team  on 01282 691333 today to find out how we can help, or apply online today.

  10. The reason you need to put car finance in the rear view mirror

With restrictions slowly easing, life finally feels like it’s getting back to normal. Meals in restaurants, not marquees. Holiday planning. Hugs! It’s not all good news though.

One annoying aspect of life pre-Covid has also creeped back into our lives these past few weeks…traffic. Yes, the tailback tantrums have returned and they’re as infuriating as ever. And yet it does go to emphasise just how important a role the car plays in our lives. Dropping the kids off at school, doing the shopping, travelling to and from work…and perhaps most importantly, taking you to your staycation destination this summer.

Many of us would be lost without our four wheels, but buying a new car or upgrading the one we currently have doesn’t come cheap. Car finance does allow a vehicle to be paid off monthly over many years, helping drive down the cost. Great for those on a budget or for anybody after a more expensive car. However, it doesn’t always mean it’s the best option.

Why a Northern Community Bank car loan will set you on the right track

By all means, go and speak to a dealership and see what deals they have. A lot will offer car finance starting at 12.9% representative. This is more than we will charge for a loan over £3,000, and that 12.9% isn’t even set in stone with ‘representative’ meaning they only have to offer that particular rate to 51% of applicants. There’s no smoke and mirrors with our rates. What you see is what you get.

Unlike Hire Purchase agreements or a Personal Contract Plan, a Northern Community Bank car loan also means you will own the car outright. No scary hidden fees, over-mileage charges or impending balloon payments waiting for you at the end of the term. You’re in total control. Whether you’re looking for a nice little A to B run-around, or a top-of-the-range model, Northern Community Bank car loans go up to £15,000 putting you firmly in the driving seat when it comes to choosing your next model.

    We’re here to help

You won’t be on the end of any fancy sales pitches if you come and speak to us. We firmly believe in honest, open, transparent dealings, focusing on affordable and flexible repayment terms to suit your financial circumstances. And we go from 0 to possible loan in seconds…well, hours. If you apply online today for a Northern Community Bank car loan, we will have a decision for you within 24 working hours. That’s still pretty rapid. We can’t guarantee that you won’t find a car finance deal more suited to your needs, but we do guarantee that our rates are always highly competitive. And that’s why all we ask is that you include us as a stop on your car loan journey.

Wherever you are in East Lancashire, we’re easy to reach…even if you don’t have a car. Visit one of our branches in Burnley, Nelson, Colne or apply online.

  11. Provident to stop doorstep lending after 140 years

Provident Financial recently announced it would stop doorstep lending after 140 years, leaving as many as 300,000 UK borrowers facing the frightening minefield of trying to identify an alternative loan option. Community Banks across the country are ready to step in to provide a safe, affordable and secure place to borrow and save.

In 2002 Northern Community Bank’s first paid member of staff and a dedicated volunteer would regularly visit neighbourhoods across the community to introduce the benefits of saving and borrowing from a community bank. On the doorsteps around Nelson, current CEO Kathryn and Burnley Branch Manager Lynne, would hear the same message

“oh we borrow from Provi, the friendly agent comes when we’ve got money on Friday”

Raising awareness about the community bank, whilst driving the presence of Provident down in the community became the motivation of all involved in Northern Community Bank. We are happy to say we have seen a continual decrease in doorstep usage across the area and are pleased to see that Provident is to stop doorstep lending at terribly high rates of interest to our neighbours. But let’s not pretend that other high-cost, and possibly unregulated, lenders will not fill the void for some borrowers.

Provident blamed “changing industry and regulatory dynamics” as well as “shifting customer preferences”. However Niall Alexander, the financial inclusion and affordable credit expert, highlighted why Provident have probably decided to stop doorstep lending. Predictively figures show that as doorstep borrowers have become less profitable and fewer in numbers, they’ve decided to dump them.

Yellow shows how much profit Provident made from doorstep lending each year

So Provident will concentrate on two of their profitable parts of the business, unsecured personal loans and credit cards through Vanquis Bank, alongside its car finance business Moneybarn.

Northern Community Bank’s trade association ABCUL highlighted the negative effect Provident lending has had in communities across the country and why community banks are the best options when borrowers are looking for a new lender

This type of lending has been a real scourge on consumers across the country for far too many years and has had a significant detrimental impact on the lives of so many people, particularly those in vulnerable circumstances. Consumers deserve fairer and more responsible financial products and services that are affordable and responsible in nature and which build financial resilience in communities and workplaces across the country – that typifies the community bank business model as THE ethical alternative within the financial services marketplace.

    CEO Robert Kelly

The credit union lending model includes an encouragement to save alongside loan repayments through the ‘Save As You Borrow‘ scheme. By assisting account holders to create savings habits it means borrowers build a savings nest that could protect them from un-expected expenses in the future.

Just as Northern Community Bank was there to offer the community a fairer, more affordable way to borrow 20 years ago on the streets of Nelson – we are here today to help people across East Lancashire.

  12. Unpack our holiday loans for a summer getaway to remember

We’re here when you are ready to get away with affordable holiday loans

‘We’re all goin’ on a summer holiday.’ The words of Cliff Richard have never struck a stronger chord.

Now, we’re not counting our chickens just yet – ok, we have been looking at new flip-flops – but for the first time in forever there’s real hope we could be swapping the inside of Aldi for the inside of an airport this summer. And after 12 months of never-ending pandemic stress, who doesn’t need a holiday more than ever? The question is, ‘Where?’

Staycations are, of course, back on the cards, but as more of Boris’ air travel traffic lights, hopefully, turn green in the coming weeks, we may need to start digging out those maps again. Whether you’re driving to Cornwall for a week, or hoping to jet off abroad, one fact always remains…holidays don’t come cheap.

Why holiday loans are just the ticket for travel

Once we are given the green light to travel safely, it’ll be time to start holiday planning. Flights, accommodation, new clothes, insurance, books, money for mum’s obligatory holiday keyring.

We go away to relax, but affording a family trip can sometimes cause more stress than an afternoon of home-schooling. We’re over the moon that many of our account holders have built up extra savings during the pandemic, but we also understand there are many who still need a helping hand in order to fund some fun in the sun. That’s why holiday loans were invented – to let you enjoy your holiday, worry-free. After all, there’s no point in breaking the bank for a break away…if all you’re going to be doing is lying on a lounger worrying how you’re affording it all.

Northern Community Bank should be your first port of call for loans

Northern Community Bank holiday loans are a genuine passport to relaxation with competitive interest rates and fairly calculated, affordable repayments allowing you to fully unwind, safe in the knowledge you’re not over-stretching. If you’re the type of person who enjoys shopping around for the best exchange rate, why wouldn’t you do the same for a loan?

Our quotations are free, with no obligation. Apply online for a Northern Community Bank holiday loan, and you can spend however long you want shopping around looking for the best deal for your money.  If you do eventually land with us, we won’t waste any time in making your dream holiday become a reality. Once your loan has been approved, a BACS payment can be made on the same day. You’ll have gone from flicking through holiday brochures on the Monday, to putting down a deposit on the Tuesday…flip-flops next.

Only time will tell what the rest of 2021 has in store for us holiday-wise, but rest assured, our staff will do all they can to help you get the break you deserve.
