  1. Make your dream holiday a reality with Northern Community Bank small holiday loans

Small holiday loans are the perfect option for anybody looking to spend some well-earned time away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

The summer holidays are fast approaching, and that can only mean one thing – it’s time to start booking some time in the sun. We’re (fairly) certain the UK’s going to be bathed in glorious sunshine this summer, so staycations could well be at the forefront of a lot of people’s minds again.

Blackpool, Southport, Morecambe, Scotland, Scarborough, Whitby; the UK really is your oyster when it comes to at-home travel destinations with numerous types of breaks available for holidaymakers of all ages. If you’re brave enough to take on a spot of airport queue roulette, then a trip abroad may be just what you and your family need in order to recharge the batteries.

After two years of cancellations and restrictions, those sun-kissed foreign shores are more appealing than ever now. Wherever you end up choosing to go, the chances are it’s going to cost a pretty penny. And that’s why our small holiday loans are here to help you on your way.

Do small holiday loans come with high interest rates?

The smaller the holiday loan, the greater the interest rate. At least that’s the case when dealing with unscrupulous, high-cost lenders. Northern Community Bank provides relatively low value UK holiday loans – ranging from £500 to £1,500 – but sky-high interest rates? We leave them where they belong…on the runway. Instead, we’d much rather help you spread the cost over a manageable period, with repayments tailored to suit you and your financial circumstances.

And for those wanting a last-minute getaway? We aim to have holiday loan applications turned around as quickly as possibly – usually within one working day – with funds deposited into your account the same day if approved. Having this money available within 24 hours or sooner means you can go from holiday browsing to holiday shopping quicker than you can say ‘flip-flops’.

Pack away your worries and put your trust in Northern Community Bank small holiday loans

Northern Community Bank small holiday loans have one objective and one objective only; to give families a chance of creating memories that last a lifetime. Whether it’s a trip to the seaside, or a bucket list trip stateside, our mission is to give you the funds to make your holiday dream a reality…without repayment nightmares.

Northern Community Bank is a not-for-profit financial cooperative, owned and controlled by the people who use its services. No external shareholders. No investors. We keep your finances in your community. That’s why you won’t find any setup fee or early settlement penalties when you take out a loan with us. It’s why we have numerous schemes aimed at helping you save money.

And it’s why if you contact us today, we’ll answer any questions you have on small holiday loans, or any other loan issues you may be struggling with.

  2. Northern Community Bank pride as two members of the team take the limelight at national conference

The first ABCUL conference held face-to-face in two years provided two moments of pride for Northern Community Bank as President Gerard Spain received the 2022 Kirit Patel Award and Chief Business Officer Tia Warbrick graduated from the CU Futures programme.

Gerard’s award acknowledged his significant contribution to the North West ABCUL forum and wider community bank movement. ABCUL President Paul Norgrove revealed that Gerard was to be honoured with the award in front of over 200 delegates for service to the credit union sector and recognised the management accounting tool kit developed by the Northern Community Bank President.

Gerard has been the President of Northern Community Bank for 16 years, overseeing phenomenal growth and development in serving the communities that we provide ethical savings and affordable loan services to – we could not be any more proud to see him receive this much deserved award.

The Northern Community Bank pride continues for our Chief Business Officer Tia. Tia joined six CU Futures colleagues graduating from the 10 month personal and professional development programme for community bank professionals aged 35 or under. The aim of CU Futures is to train, retain talent and create the next generation of community bank leaders.

The course incorporates formal learning through an accredited qualification alongside personal development through The Pacific Institute, networking and engagement, presentation and media skills training, led by former Chair of the Credit Union Foundation and journalist Liz Barclay. Tia also had the opportunity to visit both community and industrial credit unions to gain a greater insight into how other community banks operate – including London Plus, Serve & Protect and Penny Post.

During the CU Futures graduation it was highlighted that during its seven year existence 65 young professionals have graduated from the programme – 58 of those are still working in the credit union sector and many hold senior roles within their organisations. As last year’s ABCUL conference was held online due to the coronavirus pandemic, Tia and her colleagues were joined by last year’s graduates on stage to celebrate their achievements.

As a Community Bank, we totally endorse the description of Tia and her fellow graduates; they are not the future leaders of the credit union movement – they are the leaders of today.

  3. Why an IVA may not be the best option for you

IVAs – Individual Voluntary Arrangements to give them their full name – are becoming an increasingly popular option for people looking to get themselves out of debt.

It’s no secret that as the cost of living continues to soar, more and more people are struggling to keep their finances in check. In fact, the number of people going financially insolvent in England and Wales actually jumped by 17% in the first quarter of this year.

Dig a little deeper, and the figures don’t read any better. A staggering 332 people a day were declared insolvent or bankrupt in England and Wales from January to March; the equivalent to one person every 4 minutes and 20 seconds.  And the situation doesn’t look like improving anytime soon.

On the surface, taking out an IVA can seem like a safe and sensible way of getting to grips with unmanageable debt. A formal agreement between you and your creditors, it allows you to pay back your debts over a period of time, and can give you more control over your assets than bankruptcy. But there are risks attached.

5 IVA risks you need to be aware of

    1. Costs. IVAs do not come cheap. They must be set up by a qualified person – who will then manage the case on your behalf.  How much you pay this insolvency practitioner can vary considerably, but more often than not it will be in the thousands, and will be paid in instalments as part of your IVA payments. If you start IVA proceedings, and it doesn’t work out, you will most likely still have to pay the fees.

    2. Credit rating. Your credit score is effectively your financial report card. The better your rating, the more likely it is that you’ll be approved for loans, credit etc. IVAs negatively impact credit ratings, and will usually remain on your file for five to six years from the date of approval.

    3. Budgeting. If poor budgeting is the reason behind your financial troubles, then unless you find a way to form healthier spending habits, an IVA may only lead to further stress.  IVAs are legally binding arrangements that you must comply with. And while monthly payments will be affordable, a tight budget will be required while the debt is repaid.

    4. Privacy. Your IVA will be listed on the Individual Insolvency Service register. This register is public and can be accessed by anyone who wishes to look for it.

    5. It may affect your mortgage application. Some mortgage lenders will refuse applicants who have taken out an IVA. Others will still consider you, but only once the IVA drops from your file.

Northern Community Bank is here to help

Decisions around finances and debt are often stressful and laced with doubt. As a Community Bank we encourage you to contact your community and try to agree a solution within your budget before going down an IVA route that could affect you for many years to come. If you need to talk about your account, then don’t hesitate to contact us. Our aim is to encourage responsible saving and ethical borrowing.

We do this by recognising your needs and formulating the best possible approach to suit your circumstances. No risk attached here.

  4. Buy Now, Pay Later (BNPL) – what is it?

Buy Now, Pay Later are four little words you’re probably fairly familiar with.

At a time when consumer spending continues to rise even in the face of a cost of living crisis, Buy Now, Pay Later has become increasingly prevalent in many people’s lives.

For those who haven’t encountered it – Buy Now, Pay Later is a form of short-term financing that allows shoppers to buy a product without having to pay for it until a later date.

How this works is a BNPL provider – major players in the industry include Klarna, Clearpay and Laybuy – will pay the retailer on your behalf, and then you will pay them back usually over a few weeks or months.

Why is Buy Now, Pay Later increasing in popularity?

Immediacy for one. No need to wait for payday, BNPL provides shoppers with an opportunity to get their hands on a new top, TV or toaster even if their bank account is saying ‘no’.

It also offers a convenient way of spreading the cost of this purchase, or purchases, over a period of time that best suits your financial circumstances. You usually don’t need a high credit score to qualify, approvals tend to be fast and painless, and often there’s no interest.

What’s not to love? Well, a few things.

What are the disadvantages to Buy Now, Pay Later

There are fears Buy Now, Pay Later is causing some shoppers to spend beyond their means, adding to existing debts in the process, and leaving them in further financial distress.

This has been backed up by research carried out by Citizens Advice, which found more than two in five Buy Now, Pay Later customers borrowed money to make repayments. Types of borrowing included overdrafts, borrowing from friends and family, loans and payday loans.

Millie Harris, a Debt Adviser at Citizens Advice, said:

Most of the people I speak to who are using Buy Now Pay Later live off overdrafts and credit cards, so are using these for repayments. It’s just relying on one debt to pay off another debt.

It’s heartbreaking to see parents who can’t afford their children’s clothes or shoes, turning to Buy Now Pay Later, thinking it’s doing them a favour. In reality, it’s just more debt and more creditors, on top of what they’re already facing.

What scares me most is how easily people can slip into using Buy Now, Pay Later.”

Another one of the big risks associated with Buy Now, Pay Later is the temptation to splurge or make impulse purchases. This can quickly result in a mountain of unwanted clutter filling your house, but more worryingly can lead to a rising amount of repayments, too.

And here’s where BNPL schemes can become treacherous.

Missing a payment will often trigger late fees and penalties, escalating your debt while leaving you with less money to pay the initial amount back. This could be further compounded by the possibility of having  to pay interest for the rest of the payment period. Not to mention the fact, your credit score is likely to take a hit as well.

With Northern Community Bank, what you see is always what you get.

We don’t believe in hidden fees or penalties, and instead would rather work with you to make sure loan repayments are affordable and easy to manage.

Reflecting on our first 6 months operating in Cumbria 2022

In our first 6 months post-merger with Affinity Community Bank and Northern Community Bank’s expansion in to Cumbria we are ecstatic to have welcomed 1,000 new account holders increasing our Cumbria membership by over 70%.

Both new and existing membership are now able to access a range of ethical saving and affordable loan products as well as added benefits such as no annual membership fee, a free bereavement fund benefit on savings and loans (subject to rules), a share of the profits paid yearly and savings protected by the FSCS.

During these first 6 months we have loaned our new Cumbria community over £1m in affordable loans. Saving individual’s and their families over £876,000 in interest compared to a well known high cost lender.

Northern Community Bank’s £500 Family Loan & Saving Scheme has been a largely popular product with our new membership. This loan product helps families access affordable finance and allows them to make repayments and saving deposits directly from their Child Benefit. This loan is particularly useful to help with the costs of a family holiday, school uniforms or just to smooth a bump in the road.

With savings levels maintaining £1.6m and a growth of 136% in loans Northern Community Bank feels positive about fulfilling our aim to create a financially stronger and more sustainable community bank for our combined membership.

  6. School Uniform Loans

We know how much children shoot up in size in a small space of time and that will mean many of our account holders will be worrying about school uniform cost now your children have broken up from school.

Of course buying school uniforms actually means buying much more than just the uniform; the list includes sports gear and equipment, joining clubs, calculators the list goes on.

According to the Children’s Society parents spend on average £422 per year for each child at secondary school and £287 for children at primary school.

Well luckily for you Northern Community Bank staff have years of experience helping our account holders when dealing with the costs of school uniforms and we can always be relied on in financially difficult times. Don’t fall victim to a payday loan or loan sharks in these circumstances, if you need to borrow your community bank is here.

At Northern Community Bank we have two loan application options for school uniforms. Borrow up to £500 with the quick Family Loan & Saving Scheme application or Standard Loan application for larger loans over £500.

Anyone who borrows from Northern Community Bank becomes a saver too

Not only do we make borrowing affordable, anyone who borrows from Northern Community Bank to buy school uniforms is expected to save into a savings account as they make loan repayments. These savings build up and act as collateral against the loan. They are fixed against the loan balance and can only be accessed once the borrower has fully repaid the loan or the loan balance is lower than the savings balance, when the borrower is allowed to take out the difference. As their loan balance decreases – savings build up, resulting in a savings pot when the loan is finished that can go towards next year’s school uniforms.

Once we’ve been provided with the information we need we’ll try to make a decision as quickly as possible. We understand how vital help with school uniform costs can be and so we aim to deal with all applications within two days and, wherever possible, by the very next day. As soon as we’ve decided, the money will be transferred into your account, which puts you in the happy position of being able to start shopping for school uniform items without having sleepless nights over how you are going to pay for it all upfront.

Apply online today or give our friendly team a call on 01282 691333 to discuss your option. Then all you will have to worry about is getting those creases ironed out.

  7. Why a Northern Community Bank loan for holiday is a first class ticket to your dream destination

Taking out a loan for holiday might seem like a lavish expense to some people. But don’t we all deserve a break from the humdrum of daily life every once in a while?

Getting away from it all can do wonders for our physical and mental health. As well as lowering stress and providing us with the opportunity to recharge our batteries, they’re a fantastic chance to spend quality time with family and friends (yes, even kids’ clubs), experience new cities and countries, and create photo albums of memories to treasure forever.

Sadly, these experiences don’t come cheap. Flights, hotels, spending money; let’s not even get started on the ‘essential’ holiday clothes you’ll need. Paying off those brand new flip flops (and the rest) can see stress levels reaching a height not even two weeks in the Maldives could lower. Taking out a personal loan for holiday through Northern Community Bank will give you all the funds you’ll need, but in a sensible, structured way that won’t leave you burying your head in the sand.

Where should I holiday this summer?

Can you guess the 5 of the top holiday destinations Britons are wanting to visit this summer? According to The Travel Association, Spain, USA, France, Italy and Greece are the five most popular options UK holidaymakers are considering this year. We certainly wouldn’t say no to any of those – especially after a ‘restrictive’ two years – but we’re not here to give you travel advice, we’re here to get you on that flight, with a drink in your hand, and not a care in the world.

Whether you’re looking to book ahead or you’re on the hunt for a last minute deal, a Northern Community Bank personal loan for holiday is just the ticket you’ll need. Not only does it spread the cost over a manageable period, with repayments tailored to suit you, it also affords you the flexibility to shop around in order to get the best deal out there.

Speak to us today on 01282 691333 about a personal loan for holiday, and by the end of the conversation your next stop could well be the travel agents.

  8. Don’t get lost looking for cheap car finance deals

It can be easy to lose your way looking for cheap car finance. Let Northern Community Bank put you in the driving seat with an affordable Car Loan.

Taking your shiny new motor out for the first time is undoubtedly one of the best feelings there is, but the journey to arrive at this point can be a very different story. Shopping for a car should be one of life’s greatest pleasures; choosing the make, the colour, the gadgets you’ll never use – what could possibly take the fun out of that? The cost.

Personal contract purchases, hire purchases, contract hire; the road to a cheap car finance deal is often paved with financial risk and potholes of uncertainty. So much so, your car buying experience can go from 0 to headache in no time at all. Fortunately, there’s another option; one that won’t see you driving head first into unmanageable debt.

Northern Community Bank – A better alternative to cheap car finance

If you’re out there searching for cheap car finance deals, all we ask is that you put the brakes on for a minute, wind down your window, and take a look at a Northern Community Bank car loan.

The biggest difference between using one of our car loans instead of trying to find a cheap car finance deal is the fact you’ll own the car outright – no renting, and no worries about the condition of the car when you come to return it. A personal car loan means you won’t be restricted by dealer demands such as mileage limits, and you’ll have more flexibility when it comes to repayment terms. A car loan also allows you to shop around for the best deal, meaning you hold all the cards if you find yourself needing to negotiate at any stage.

You can repay a Northern Community Bank car loan early without any extra fees or charges as well, and on top of all this there’s no looming balloon payments hanging over you either.

Choose Northern Community Bank for a car loan

Our aim is to make buying a new, or second hand, car simple – and fair. One of the ways we do this is by making the online application process as straightforward as possible.

Each application is assessed individually by a person – not a computer. We look at affordability, income and expenditure, and only lend amounts we are confident you can afford to pay back. Applicants can also expect a decision within 24 hour working hours.

On the surface, cheap car finance deals can seem like a good idea but they can soon see you on a road to nowhere. Before you take the plunge, give Northern Community Bank a call on 01282 691333 and we’ll do everything we can to have you driving off into the sunset with an affordable car loan safe in the knowledge you’re not paying over the odds.

  11. Worried about the rising cost of living?

Rising Cost of Living – Money Saving Tips

The rising cost of living is a topic no household can afford to ignore.

With energy bills soaring, the price of fuel rocketing, and a weekly shopping trip to Iceland now costing almost as much as a holiday to Iceland; households are feeling the pinch. Throw into the mix fluctuating mortgage interest rates, never-ending tax hikes, and no sign of all this inflation slowing; it’s easy to see why people are beginning to tighten their belts a little more.

The reasons behind this current cost of living crisis are wide ranging. An economy recovering from the pandemic, various wars around the world, supply chain issues impacting food and gas. All these things have come together at the same time to create a perfect rising cost of living storm.

Thankfully, Northern Community Bank is here to help you weather whatever the next few months may bring, starting with our top 9 money-saving tips.

    1. Choose energy-efficient appliances. If you’re looking at replacing an old dishwasher, washing machine or fridge freezer, try and go green. An energy-efficient tumble dryer can save you in the region of £100 a year. You could save another £100 a year just by turning your thermostat down by 1 degree as well. And if you’re fed up of feeling the chill at night, fill up a hot bottle and place it under your bed covers 30 minutes before you turn in.
    2. Find the cheapest fuel in your area. Don’t let rising fuel prices drive you to despair. Take a trip to petrolprices and find out which garage in your area is selling the cheapest fuel. For those who travel to and from work every day in their car or van, this is an invaluable resource that doesn’t cost a penny.
    3. Cancel your gym membership. Keeping in tip-top condition is incredibly important, but you don’t need to be weighed down by monthly gym membership fees just to stay fit and active. Arrange a weekly walk with friends. Try out your local parkrun. Why not see if your work has a Cycle to Work Scheme you can take advantage of?
    4. Shop around. From eggs through to chicken breasts, the price of everyday food items is continually climbing. Every month, consumer watchdog Which? carries out a price comparison to see how much the UK’s biggest supermarkets charge for a trolley of groceries. As well as keeping an eye on this, don’t dismiss supermarkets’ own brands, buy in bulk, and use vouchers or discount codes where possible.
    5. Cancel direct debits for unused services. We’re spending more than ever on subscriptions, but are you getting the most use out of them? Take a look over your last bank statement and make a note of where your money is going. You may be surprised to see you’re still paying for a certain subscription, or it may just be that you forgot to log back in and cancel after a free trial period. Always terminate your subscription first before cancelling a direct debit.
    6. Go incognito. Opening up the privacy browsing tab on your computer or phone isn’t just for security purposes, it can also be a fantastic money-saving tool. Going incognito stops companies from tracking your digital habits and putting prices up. It also reduces temptation by blocking online retailers from bombarding you with targeted advertising.
    7. Set yourself little saving goals. Start off by reducing a small cost, something that saves you £5 a week. It might be eating out for lunch one day at work, or a coffee you treat yourself to in the morning. Transfer the £5 into a separate account, and use this as a safety fund.
    8. Are you getting all the income you are entitled too? Check whether you are receiving all the support and benefits you are entitled to by clicking here.
    9. Contact your local council for advice. They may be able to signpost you towards a organisation that can assist further.

Northern Community Bank may not be able to stop the rising cost of living, but our friendly and knowledgeable staff are always on hand to help you manage your finances better whether that be by building savings, organising your finances or borrowing money affordably.
