We first met Aaron* whilst he was buying paint from the Community Re-Paint section at SPE Furnishings. He had a desire to improve the rented property he shared with two house mates, to make their house more like a home. Aaron was wary about financial organisations and had experienced high interest lenders taking advantage of people in his community. Aaron had never heard of a credit union and liked the concept of Northern Community Bank being a financial co-operative that is owned and run for the benefit of local people.
Aaron wanted to borrow £400 to make improvements in the bathroom and re-decorate the hall and landing in their property. Northern Community Bank staff loved his photographs of the newly renovated stairs, landing and bathroom. Aaron explained that the landlord had been very impressed and was also improving the property after seeing his tenant’s effort – old windows had since been replaced with energy efficient PVC upgrades to keep the house warmer in the winter.
