Each year, we come together as a community to reflect on how Northern Community Bank has performed and to decide what comes next. One of the most important moments in that process is our Annual General Meeting (AGM).

When is the AGM?

Our AGM will take place on 27th February 2026. At the AGM, we’ll confirm whether we’re able to share our success with account holders. All account holders are welcome to attend either in-person or virtually.

The Agenda for anyone who would like to attend the AGM can be found here. We are also proposing a change to the Rulebook which can be viewed and downloaded here. If you have any questions of comments regarding the Rulebook changes, please email them to us at hello@northerncb.uk before the AGM.

If approved, a share of the profits and any loan interest rebate will be paid during the week commencing 9th March 2026.

We know many people look out for this, so here’s a simple explanation of what it means, how it works, and who’s eligible.

Register Online Here

Register In Person Here

What is a share of the profits?

A share of the profits is our way of saying thank you for saving with Northern Community Bank.

Savings held in Northern Community Bank’s accounts are used to support fair and affordable borrowing across the communities we serve. The interest paid on those loans helps cover our running costs and build reserves to protect the future of the community bank.

If, after doing all of this, we make a surplus, the Board of Directors propose how we share those profits with our account holders.

Your share is paid as a percentage of the savings you held during the financial year.

It isn’t guaranteed, it depends on how the community bank has performed, but when we’re able to pay it, it’s a meaningful reward for being part of our community.

Interest-bearing savings accounts

Some savings accounts earn interest instead of a share of the profits.

The Fixed Term Savings Account and the Northern Saver Account are interest-bearing accounts and are not eligible for a share of the profits.

This is because the interest rate is agreed upfront and paid regardless of the community bank’s overall performance.

What is a loan interest rebate?

If you’ve had a loan with us, you may also be eligible for a loan interest rebate.

The interest you pay on loans helps fund the community bank and support our communities. When we’ve had a strong year and made a surplus, we may return some of that interest back to you as a rebate.

In simple terms, it means you could receive a portion of the interest you’ve paid back into your account – one of the benefits of borrowing in a fair and affordable way.

Any loan interest rebate approved at the AGM will be paid directly into eligible accounts shortly afterwards.

Important: who is eligible?

This part is really important.

Only accounts that are up to date and active will receive a share of the profits and/or a loan interest rebate.

That means:

Savings accounts must be active

Loan accounts must be up to date and not in arrears

Dormant accounts (no activity for over a year) are not eligible

Closed accounts are not eligible

Fixed Term Savings and Northern Saver accounts are not eligible for a share of the profits, as they earn interest instead

This helps us share profits fairly and responsibly, while protecting the long-term strength of the community bank.

Why we do this

Northern Community Bank exists to serve people, not external shareholders. When we do well, we believe it’s right to share that success with the people who make it possible – our account holders.

A share of the profits and loan interest rebates is just one of the ways we stay true to our values: fair, transparent, and rooted in our communities.

If you have any questions relating to the share of the profits, our friendly team is always happy to help.

At Northern Community Bank, we want looking after your money to feel simple, fair, and worry-free. One of the ways we do this is by offering a free bereavement fund benefit on your savings and loans. It’s just one of the ways we look out for our account holders, helping you and your loved ones feel secure.

To make sure this benefit works exactly as it should, it’s really important to keep your details up to date. That includes your beneficiary – the person you’ve chosen to receive any bereavement fund payments if something were to happen.

What exactly is a beneficiary?

A beneficiary is simply the person (or people) you want to receive your bereavement fund money. It’s your way of making sure your savings or loan cover goes to the people who matter most, exactly as you intend.

Think of it like this: if something happens to you, your beneficiary is the person who would get the support your account provides. If no one is nominated, the money might go through your estate instead, which can take longer and be more complicated for your loved ones.

Northern Community Bank tip: It’s a small thing that can make a big difference – checking who your beneficiary is could save your family unnecessary stress later.

Example:

Imagine you’ve been saving for a few years and have £2,000 in your account, plus free the bereavement fund benefit with us. You’ve nominated your partner, as your beneficiary. If anything happens to you, your partner would receive the money quickly and simply – no extra delays, no extra paperwork.

Now, if your details weren’t up to date, or you hadn’t nominated anyone, that same £2,000 would go through your estate. This could mean extra paperwork and delays at a time when your loved ones need support the most.

Northern Community Bank tip: Even if nothing has changed for years, it’s worth taking a moment to check your beneficiary details. A quick update could save your family time and worry.

How to update your beneficiary details

It only takes a few minutes, and we’re here to help every step of the way:

Log in to your online account – check your personal information and make any updates.

Log into the app and send us a direct message.

Send us an email – you can email us at hello@northerncb.uk with your details

Call or pop in to see us – our friendly team is happy to help if you’d rather speak to someone directly.

Northern Community Bank tip: If you’ve recently married, entered a civil partnership, or changed your surname, now is the perfect time to check your details.

Peace of mind starts here

Life is full of surprises, but keeping your account details up to date is an easy way to make sure your free bereavement fund benefit works when it’s needed most. At Northern Community Bank, being part of our community means looking out for each other, and that includes making sure your money and your family are protected.

Ready to get started? Update your details today and give yourself the peace of mind you deserve.

When times are tough, or an unexpected expense crops up, borrowing can feel like the only option. It might start with a small loan from a friend, a favour from a family member, or a quick click on a ‘buy now, pay later’ button. But while these options might seem convenient, they can often create more problems than they solve.

At Northern Community Bank, we believe everyone deserves access to fair, affordable and safe ways to borrow money. We’re here to help you understand the risks of informal or unregulated borrowing, and show you how to borrow in a way that protects both your finances and your peace of mind.

The problem with borrowing from friends or family

Turning to someone you know can seem like a simple, friendly solution when you’re short on cash. But even with the best intentions, borrowing within personal relationships can quickly become complicated.

There’s often no written agreement or clear repayment plan, which can lead to confusion, frustration and strain on relationships. According to Fair4All Finance, around 21% of adults in the UK borrowed from friends or family in the past year. Of these, 16% who borrowed from friends and 8% who borrowed from family were charged interest, while 17% and 9% respectively said the relationship weakened as a result.

These statistics show that informal borrowing can affect not just your wallet, but your emotional wellbeing too. What starts as a favour can easily turn into tension or conflict, and that’s a cost no one wants to pay.

Illegal money lending is on the rise

More worrying still is the growing number of people turning to unlicensed or illegal lenders, often called loan sharks. The latest research from Fair4All Finance estimates that up to 1.9 million adults in Great Britain used an unlicensed money lender in the past 12 months.

The study also found that:

51% of people who borrowed from an unlicensed lender had previously been declined for other forms of credit.

65% had children to support.

38% had monthly incomes above £3,200 – showing this issue affects working families too.

Illegal lenders often appear friendly at first, offering quick cash when you feel out of options. But once you’re in, the repayments can spiral quickly, and the pressure to pay can be intense. These lenders operate outside the law, meaning borrowers have no protection or recourse if things go wrong.

Choosing safe ways to borrow money from regulated, community-rooted institutions like Northern Community Bank ensures you’re protected, supported and treated fairly at every step.

The hidden risks of Buy Now, Pay Later

‘Buy Now, Pay Later’ (BNPL) schemes have become a popular way to spread the cost of purchases. But while they can seem harmless, they are still a form of borrowing, and one that’s easy to underestimate.

Because repayments are often small and spread out, it’s easy to lose track of how much you owe across multiple platforms. Missed payments can lead to fees, credit score damage, and a snowballing cycle of debt.

Using BNPL responsibly requires the same care and planning as any other form of borrowing. It’s worth taking a step back and considering whether there might be safer, more transparent ways to borrow that give you full control over your repayments.

A fair and affordable alternative

At Northern Community Bank, we offer safe ways to borrow money that are designed to work for you – not against you. Our loans are transparent, affordable and built around your circumstances.

Here’s what makes borrowing from us different:

We’re regulated – Your loan is protected by the same standards that govern all responsible lenders.

We’re part of your community – We understand real-life pressures and make decisions based on your needs, not profits.

We’re supportive – We’ll talk you through your options, help you budget for repayments, and never push you into borrowing more than you can afford.

We’re clear and fair – You’ll always know what you owe, when it’s due, and what it will cost, with no surprises.

Whether you’re planning for something special or facing an unexpected bill, we’re here to help you borrow in a way that feels safe, manageable and empowering.

Taking control of your borrowing

If you’re already borrowing, or thinking about taking out a loan, it’s worth checking:

Do I really need to borrow?

Can I afford the repayments comfortably?

Am I borrowing from a regulated, trustworthy source?

And if you’re worried about existing borrowing, from friends, family, or elsewhere – we’re here to help. Talking to us early can make all the difference.

At Northern Community Bank, we don’t just lend money. We help you make confident choices that protect your financial wellbeing. Because finding safe ways to borrow money shouldn’t feel out of reach, it should feel simple, fair, and part of the community you live in.

At Northern Community Bank, your trust means everything to us. When you choose to save or borrow with us, we want you to feel confident that your money is safe. That’s why we’re proud to be part of the Financial Services Compensation Scheme (FSCS) – a government-backed scheme that protects your money if something ever happened to the bank.

What is the FSCS?

The Financial Services Compensation Scheme is the UK’s deposit protection scheme. It was set up by the government and is completely free for you as an account holder. The scheme makes sure that if a bank, building society, community bank or credit union was ever unable to meet its financial obligations, eligible customers would get their money back.

How does the FSCS protect your money?

Up to £120,000 per person, per bank

If you hold money with Northern Community Bank and, in the unlikely event, we could no longer operate, the FSCS would step in and compensate you up to £120,000.

Are there any exceptions?

The FSCS doesn’t cover every type of financial product. For example, investments, insurance policies, and money held with providers outside the UK may have different levels of protection. The good news is that your savings with Northern Community Bank are fully covered by the scheme.

Why this matters to you

We know peace of mind is important when it comes to your money. The FSCS means that no matter what happens, your savings with Northern Community Bank are protected by law, giving you the confidence to save and plan for the future.

Find out more

You can read more about how the FSCS works on our FSCS information page or by visiting www.fscs.org.uk

If you have any questions about your account, just get in touch. We’re here to help.

A poor credit report doesn’t just potentially affect your chances of getting a mortgage, a loan or credit card these days, it can really reduce the chances of securing the right rental property. It can also impact your mobile phone contract, car insurance, bank accounts, and it could invariably lead to you being refused credit or being offered higher interest rates. A credit score is an estimate of your ability to fulfil your financial commitments, based on previous dealings. The consequences are wide-ranging and the strain they place upon our financial circumstances can be demoralising as well as damaging. What we need to remember though is a poor credit score can happen to anyone, at any stage of their life. And no matter how frustrating it may be, there are ways of addressing you credit file and improving it.

It is important to remember that there is no universal credit scoring system, all lenders have different ways to judge and assess applications for credit. From a loan provider to a mobile telephone company, to a sofa company who do higher purchase; there will be no specific score, rating or traffic light system that compares to another lender. Northern Community Bank understand credit is often an essential part of life for funding everyday essentials and major purchases. It is also an essential part of managing cash flow and budgeting peaks of expenditure.

Here are eight helpful tips when addressing your credit file

Review your credit file. You can review your credit file for free by clicking here, to check for errors. When doing this make sure to check using soft inquiries as this will not affect your credit score.

Make repayments on time. Payment history is one of the biggest determining factors in calculating a person’s credit score. Avoiding late payments is therefore crucial if we’re to keep our score high and healthy. This can be easier said than done, which is why, if you are struggling, you should contact Northern Community Bank.

Deal with your delinquencies. Being late by more than one month is considered delinquent. A lender may not report a delinquent account to a credit agency until two or more payments are missed, so if you do miss one try your best to come up with an arrangement as soon as possible.

Have any inaccurate things removed. Filling a dispute – for example, over a late payment – can have a big impact on your credit score. Whether it goes up or down though will depend on the outcome of the dispute. Late payments will generally stay on your report for seven years.

Limit requests for new credit. When applying for a credit card, loan or mortgage, a lender will complete a comprehensive review of your credit history in order to determine how much of a risk you pose. This is called a hard inquiry. A single hard search is unlikely to have an adverse affect on your credit score. However, a number of them in a short period of time can be problematic.

Reduce your credit utilisation. Your credit utilisation ratio is a measure of how much available credit you are using. For example, if you have a credit card limit of £1,000 and the balance is £600, that is a rate of 60%. You should aim to keep this below 30% through not overspending and ensuring credit card balances are paid off.

Keep old accounts open. Closing down old lines of credit while you have a balance on other ones could increase your credit utilisation ratio.

Prove where you live. Registering to vote will help confirm to lenders your name and address, which in turn should increase your credit score. Also, bear in mind that moving home regularly can give lenders the impression you are struggling with paying rent.

Northern Community Bank reports on a monthly basis to the credit agencies for all loans taken, which means if an account holder makes the correct payment on time their credit rating will improve. As a not-for-profit, Northern Community Bank is committed to offering products and services that help account holders manage their money and build up a history of good money management.

Are you getting the right income?

Many low-income families are struggling with the cost-of-living crisis, but many people are unaware that they could be getting extra financial help even if there’re working. There could be as much as £15 billion in unclaimed benefits, and by using a quick benefit calculator, you could find out if you’re entitled to claim some of those benefits.

What is a benefit calculator?

A benefit calculator gives you a quick idea to any extra income you could get. You will just need to answer a few questions about your current income and outgoing, and the benefit calculator can give you an estimate of what benefits you could get to boost your income.

Where can I find a benefit calculator?

There are many budget calculators available, but some of the best ones are the Money Helper benefit calculator and the Turn2us website.

How long does it take?

Most of these calculators only take 10 minutes or so to fill in your details which would be worth it if you could get a boost to your income.

What benefits does the calculator check for?

The calculators will check for most benefits including Child Benefit, Universal Credit, Pension Credit, Housing and Council Tax benefit. Most calculators will also inform you of other things you could claim. Some of these include Healthy Start Vouchers, Free prescriptions and the Warm Home discount.

Is there a limit to the number of children I can claim Child Benefit for?

With Child Benefit you can claim it for each one of your children up to the age of 16yrs old. The amount for the eldest child is £24 and for each child after is £15.90. This is paid every 4 weeks.

I’ve used the benefit calculator and I can claim extra income – how do I do this?

At the end of the form, the calculator will tell you if there are any benefits you can claim to boost your income. There will also be links underneath each benefit telling you how to make a claim. Most benefits can be claimed for online, and you will only need to complete a short form. Any information that you enter into a benefit calculator is completely confidential and does not get passed on

Are benefit calculators free to use?

Yes the benefit calculators on the Money Helper benefit calculator and Turn2us website are completely free to use.

Don’t Miss Out on Child Benefit After 16

If your child is turning 16 soon, you may need to act to keep receiving Child Benefit. Payments don’t stop automatically at their birthday, but if they’re leaving school or approved training, you’ll need to update HMRC.

Here’s everything you need to know about continuing support, what qualifies as education and how to keep your loan repayments on track if you currently pay Northern Community Bank with Child Benefit.

When Does It Stop?
It usually ends on 31st August after your child turns 16, unless they’re staying in approved education or training but you will need to update HMRC.

Can Child Benefit Continue After 16?
Yes, it can continue until your child is 20 if they remain in eligible education or training and you notify HMRC.

What Counts as ‘Approved Education’?
Full time courses like A Levels, NVQs up to Level 3 and traineeships qualify. University level or employer funded courses do not.

Home Education
This can also qualify if it started before your child turned 16 or after, if they have special needs.

Child Benefit & Your Loan Repayments
If you repay your loan via Child Benefit and those payments are due to stop, contact us to arrange a standing order instead.

Other Reasons Why It May End
Child Benefit stops at the end of February, May, August or November (whichever comes first) depending on your child’s next steps. Let HMRC know if they:

Leave approved education

Start full-time work (24+ hours/week)

Begin higher education

Claim Universal Credit

Turn 20

Will This Affect Other Benefits?
Yes, Child Tax Credit may also stop unless you update HMRC about ongoing education.

Worried about your gambling or someone else’s? We’re here to help.

For many people, gambling starts out as a bit of fun, maybe a scratch card now and then, the odd bet on the football, or a spin on an app. But for some, it can quickly become a habit that’s hard to control.

If gambling is affecting your money, your wellbeing, or your relationships, you’re not alone and you’re not without options. At Northern Community Bank, we’re here to offer support without judgement, and help you take back control.

When Gambling Becomes a Problem

Gambling can be difficult to spot as a problem at first. But here are some signs it might be time to talk to someone:

Spending more than you can afford

Chasing losses or borrowing to keep gambling

Hiding gambling from friends or family

Feeling anxious, stressed or low afterwards

Struggling to pay bills, buy food, or keep up with loan repayments

If any of these feel familiar, you’re not alone and things can get better.

What You Can Do

The first step is recognising the impact gambling is having. After that, there are lots of ways to get support and make a change—at your own pace.

1. Talk to Someone

You don’t have to face it on your own. There are organisations who understand what you’re going through:

National Gambling Support Network – local help and resources: www.begambleaware.org

GamCare – 24/7 support and free counselling: www.gamcare.org.uk / 0808 8020 133

Gambling Therapy – global online support: www.gamblingtherapy.org

National Gambling Support Network – local help and resources: www.begambleaware.org

2. Put Limits in Place

Use self-exclusion tools like GAMSTOP to block access to gambling sites

Talk to your bank or building society about blocking gambling payments

Track your spending so you know where your money’s really going

3. Speak to Us in Confidence

If gambling is affecting your finances or your loan repayments with us, please reach out. We’ll listen without judgement and help you explore your options, whether that’s adjusting your repayment plan or putting extra support in place.

We’re not here to criticise. We’re here to help.

Supporting Someone Else?

It’s not easy watching someone you care about struggle. But you don’t have to fix it all on your own. Encourage them to get support and take care of your own wellbeing too. The services listed above also offer advice for families and friends.

You’re Not Alone

Whether it’s you or someone close to you, gambling harm is more common than people realise. But it’s never too late to take back control and support is always available.

At Northern Community Bank, we’re here to listen, support, and stand alongside you.

You can always talk with us.

Let’s Talk About It

When Finances Impact Your Wellbeing

At Northern Community Bank, we understand that money and mental health can be connected. Whether you’re dealing with financial pressures, debt, anxiety around bills or simply struggling to keep up, it’s important to know that support is out there.

This page brings together insights from leading organisations like Mind, Mental Health Foundation and Citizens Advice, helping you recognise the signs of money related stress and find practical steps and trusted help.

How and Why We Get Into Debt

Debt doesn’t always come from overspending. In fact, life changes like job loss, illness or relationship breakdowns are the biggest triggers. According to the Mental Health Foundation, struggling to adjust to these changes is often what leads to financial problems and the stress that follows.

Recognising the Warning Signs

The mental health charities Mind and the Mental Health Foundation highlight common signs that money is impacting your wellbeing:

Feeling anxious when opening letters or dealing with the DWP, HMRC or benefits services

Ignoring calls, especially unknown numbers, in case it’s a creditor

Struggling to sleep because of financial worries

Avoiding social situations due to cost or embarrassment

Feeling isolated, ashamed or helpless

Getting overwhelmed at the thought of managing repayments

Did you know?

According to the Money & Mental Health Policy Institute:

1.5 million people in England experience both problem debt and mental health challenges

32% said mental health problems worsened their financial situation

76% found at least one communication method with services difficult

41% find phone calls particularly stressful

Spending as a Coping Mechanism

Sometimes, people spend money to cope with stress, sadness or anxiety. This can feel helpful in the moment but often leads to increased debt and more distress – a cycle that’s hard to break.

Mind suggests practical ways to manage this:

Tell someone you trust about your spending triggers

Don’t save card details in shopping apps or websites

Remove or limit access to spending apps and social media

Delay purchases — create a wishlist and revisit it in 24 hours

Distract yourself with positive activities or self-care

Tell your bank or credit providers if you have mental health challenges — they may offer extra protection or alerts

Getting the Right Help at the Right Time

If you’re experiencing money related stress, or if it’s affecting your Northern Community Bank account, speak to us as early as possible. We’re here to listen without judgement and help you explore your options.

Also, consider talking to a trusted friend or support organisation. You don’t have to carry this alone.

Thousands of older people are entitled to extra support, but aren’t claiming it. Let’s change that.

If you’re over State Pension age and on a low income, Pension Credit could top up your weekly income and open the door to other benefits like help with housing costs, energy bills, NHS prescriptions and more.

At Northern Community Bank, we want to make sure our communities aren’t missing out on money they’re entitled to. It’s your right so let’s make sure you’re getting it.

What Is Pension Credit?

Pension Credit is a government top-up for people who have reached State Pension age and need a bit more to live on. It comes in two parts:

Guarantee Credit – tops up your weekly income to a minimum level

Savings Credit – an extra boost if you’ve made modest savings towards retirement

You might qualify for one or both.

How Much Could You Get?

It depends on your income, savings and circumstances, but the average claim is worth over £3,900 a year, money that could make a real difference to your everyday life.

Even a small award can unlock extra help like:

Free NHS dental treatment and prescriptions

Help with heating bills through the Warm Home Discount

Council Tax reductions

Free TV licence (if over 75)

Not Sure If You’re Eligible?

Unlock Extra Income You May Be Missing Out On

Many low income families are struggling with the cost-of-living crisis, yet many people don’t realise they could be entitled to extra financial help, even if they’re working. In fact, there could be as much as £15 billion in unclaimed benefits.

Using a quick benefit calculator could help you find out if you’re able to claim some of these benefits.

What Is a Benefit Calculator and How Can It Help You?

A benefit calculator is an easy to use tool that gives you a quick estimate of any extra income you might be entitled to. You simply answer a few questions about your current income and expenses, and the calculator provides an estimate of the benefits you could claim.

Where to Find Trusted Benefit Calculators

There are many benefit calculators available online, but some of the most trusted are the Money Helper Benefit Calculator and Turn2us. What’s more, they’re completely free to use!

Just 10 Minutes Could Boost Your Finances

Most calculators take about 10 minutes to complete. That small time investment could be worth it if it means discovering extra income that could make a real difference.

Discover Which Benefits You Could Apply For

Benefit calculators typically check your eligibility for a wide range of support, including:

Child Benefit

Universal Credit

Pension Credit

Housing Benefit

Council Tax Benefit

Many calculators also highlight additional support you could claim, such as Healthy Start Vouchers, free prescriptions, and the Warm Home Discount.

Child Benefit: What You Need to Know

You can claim Child Benefit for each of your children up to the age of 16, or 18 if they stay in further education. The amount paid is £26.05 for the eldest child and £17.25 for each additional child, paid every four weeks.

Ready to Claim Your Benefits? Here’s How
At the end of the calculator, you’ll see if you’re in-line for any benefits and find direct links to make your claim. Most claims can be completed online through a simple form. Rest assured, any information you provide to a benefit calculator is completely confidential and is not shared with third parties.
